| Hello everyone, We just got our second yorkie. Her name is Daisy May. She is 10 weeks old and weighs 1.8lbs. Ever since we got her we have noticed she has a gagging problem. She doesn't throw up or anything like that She just gags. I asked the vet about it and he seemed to feel like it was no big deal. I am beginning to wonder if their is something wrong though. She usually does it when she gets really excited and then starts to calm down. Sometimes though she just does it for no reason at all that I can tell. The vet says she is healthy no parasites in her stool no congestion in her lungs. She's not having problems eating. Has anyone had this problem? I am afraid she has something wrong with her throat. I was wondering if so if she would grow out of this or if this could be life threatening. Our other yorkie does the same thing but not as often as this little girl. We are becoming very attached and am a little nervous not knowing what is wrong. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Amanda and Sparkles and Daisy May |

| It could be kennel cough. Bailey is 5 months and does the EXACT same thing. We took her to the vet and they gave us clavamox (sp?) for kennel cough.

| Sounds like kennel cough..you should have them both go to the vet for it. |

| It could also be a soft trachea. Rub each side of her throat a little, adding just a very slight pressure and see if she coughs. My Zada has a soft trachea and cannot wear collars or harnesses that come up close to the throat. If it's kennel cough then it will have to run it's course, but you can use steam to help her breath better if she gets worse. |

| If you search "reverse sneezing "on google, there are many articles about it. Our beagle did that for about a month after we got her. It was usually when she was excited or exercising. It sounded like she was dying. I would just stroke her throat a bit to try to relax her. We just tried to keep her calm and she eventually outgrew it. Of course, it is still important to have a vet look at her in case it is something more serious. |

| I have been searching on here since I posted this and have found lots of helpful information. We are all going to the vet on the first for shots and everything for both dogs. Sparkles doesn't do this as often as the little one but I will definitely have him check them both. Is there a test they can do for Kennel Cough so I can ask for it specifically? Thank you all for all the great advice. Amanda, Sparkles and Daisy May |

| She would get pretty sick if it were kennel cough and no way could you wait until the 1st to see the vet. I would think your vet would have known it was kennel cough since you have already had her checked over. I'd be worried about her trachea. Collapsed tracheas are such a problem in toy breed dogs. I assume she came with a health guarantee. I'd make sure he thoroughly checks her trachea including xrays. Here is some information on collapsed tracheas: Collapsed Trachea in Dogs |

| Thanks for all the information everyone. I will be having the vet x-ray her to see if it is a problem with her trachea and will keep a close eye on her in case it is Kennel Cough.Amanda, Sparkles, and Daisy May |

Let me start by saying THANK GOD I found this site! I felt very alone with my situation. My vet thinks that I am nuts and so does his unhappy assistants. I have 2 new yorkies. Cooper who is a 5 lb. toy and Oliver who is my poor 2.5 lb. teacup sick baby. My Oliver does the same thing! He sounds like he is blowing out of his nose a lot too. He has been to the vet 7 times and has had several meds. to no avail. He still plays and eats and drinks but he poops out easily. He even does his gag/cough during the night, he comes out of a deep sleep. He has had his kennel cough nose drops and he has had pictures of his lungs and heart and the vet said that they are perfect. I am so confused and sad by my babies condition! I am at a loss Thanks in advance for any sort of assistance! Myhre5 Cooper and Ollies momma Last edited by Myhre5; 07-20-2008 at 09:57 AM. Reason: more info needed | |
