I would like to say hello, and I am a new owner to a yorkie!! I was so happy when I came across this page and maybe someone could help me out. I have a year old little girl yorkie and I can't stand it when she keeps barking at everything. I have read the books, tried the techniques, and I want to stop the annoying bark when I am trying to relax or even when I am doing work. Can anyone give any advice that has helped you out?

2 things...I keep a waterbottle filled with water..when Maximus starts barking I spritz him...or I used to use an empty tin (an old vitakraft choco drops container) and then I put pennies in it and I would shake it...I did that when he would bark when I had to go in another room for something..it helped a little

That's why they call them yorkie yappers!

I'm no help, am I? I'm certainly not the person to ask about this. Some bark to get your attention, some because they are territorial, etc., and probably some bark because they are bored. It wouldn't surprise me, since you are a new owner, that the barking could be caused by anxiety and stress over a new home. It depends on the reason your furbaby is barking. First, you need to know why your baby is barking and try to go from there.

My last yorkie just loved to bark at people walking! Luckily, not that many people walked down our street. It was simply her being territorial.

Thanks for the advice on the water bottle. I actually just went out and bought a squirt gun, so I will try this. I just want her to be able to be a social dog, without all the yaps!!

In my training class at Petco we talked about this. The trainer said that it is important to not give them any attention. Positive or negative, becuase they will just know they got your attention, and will learn to keep barking.

She said to do something (without your dog really knowing its you) really LOUD and kind of scary. She suggested the pop can with pennies, or a cookie sheet and a wooden spoon. And when your dog starts to bark and then the loud noise comes, they'll start to realize everytime I bark that mean pop can scares me. Or that loud scary noise happens when I bark. Does that make sense? Thus far Keeley isn't barking much, but I am sure going to have to do some of these things when he does.

ALSO *very important to remember* Dogs need to be allowed to bark at least a little. It is how they communicate. It is time to use the tricks when the barking becomes excesive.

Hope that helps a little, I know someone in my class was having a really hard time with their puppy barking all the time and that is what the instructor suggested to her.

I also think the squirt bottle works wonders on my maltese, they hate to be squirted. However Tinkerbell loves LOVES and will jump up in my lap and beg for it. But it does distract her from the barking so it still does help. The pennies in the can can help too, although Tinkerbell hates it and barks AT it. But it works on her other little things she's not supposed to do. Just a little tip on the can, use one of those Slimfast cans, because it produces a much louder sound.

My yorkie, Rascal doesnt bark at all........

He is so quiet, the only time he does bark( which is like maybe once a week) is at my other dog Missy. He will bark at her if she has a certain toy that he feels like having, so he will run circles around her and bark untill she drops the toy then he runs, grabs the toy, and runs away and hides behind the couch where Missy cant get him or the toy

Missy on the other hand is my yakker. She will bark at anything and anyone, like last night, My daughters balloon got stuck on the ceiling, finaly a couple of hours later is started falling down. Missy went nuts, nothing I could do to calm her down. So I did something I heard about on YT, I filled a water bottle up with water and started squirting her. She would stop for about a secound and look at me like I lost my mind. Then she would start back up again. It took the entire bottle of water to get her to stop

The only reason she stop was because she was soaking wet. She wouldnt come near me for the rest of the night. She is still mad at me too, but she has not barked at anything since last night.

I found the squirt bottle works with Ahia. she knows the words " do you want the squirt bottle". but.... i have a problem with that technique. when i go to spray her for her brusing she ducks and runs. even tho it was effective I wish i had never started that method.
Buckeye barks when he sees people out side i have found a cure for that problem. i installed a window blind in his "perch". when he barks at people i just let the blind down. he stops.

Just wanted to say welcome. We have some really good, experienced yorkie owners on here that should be coming around soon to give you some sound advice. Unfortunately, I have not yet gotten my yorkie so I can't say much on the subject.

I use the pennies in a can thing...Maddie hates it. Now all I have to do is say, "Should I get the can?" and she will stop immediately.

Thank you yorkie lovers for the advice on helping my Sydney quiet on the barking. I have been using the squirt gun technique for the past couple of days and it is doing pretty well. I have a can ready with pennies, and I am ready to try that, but she is good so far with the squirt gun. I took her to petco training when she was a pup, and I should have asked at the time what to do about the barking. Thanks everyone for helping out!! I hope everyone enjoys their loved little yorkies, and they don't yap too much!!
