Default Virginia Bill That Addresses PETA Practices

From the Washington Post:

RICHMOND — Nothing is warm and fuzzy in the world of Virginia animal-welfare organizations this year as shelters attack each other over a seemingly slight tweak to the state code that some activists say could put a major shelter out of business. At the heart of this fight is People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and its record on euthanasia, which alarms other animal advocates.

PETA operates a large shelter at its headquarters in Norfolk, where every year the vast majority of cats and dogs taken in are euthanized. The shelter came under fire last fall after it euthanized a Chihuahua that was inexplicably snatched from its owner’s porch by a PETA contractor on the Eastern Shore.

So the timing was perfect for a bill put forward by Sen. William M. Stanley Jr. (R-Franklin) that has emerged from both houses of the state legislature and that defines a private animal shelter as “operating for the purpose of finding permanent adoptive homes.” Under the current code, that description is only one of several that can describe a shelter.

Supporters say the bill clarifies the law — but makes it harder for organizations such as PETA to euthanize animals without first trying to find them homes.

In 2014, according to state reports, PETA took in 2,631 cats and dogs. All but 307 were euthanized.

“It’s just impossible to consider that they are making an attempt to adopt out animals with that failure record,” said Debra Griggs of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies. The proposal codifies what “all shelters in Virginia are already doing — except for PETA.

“Because of the high number of unwanted companion animals and the lack of good homes, sometimes the most humane thing that a shelter worker can do is give an animal a peaceful release,” the organization says. They lament that “this selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them . . . has created an overpopulation crisis.”

Such pronouncements have drawn accusations of animal cruelty. Critics question whether PETA, despite a radical, pro-animal outlook that encourages veganism and abhors zoos, cares about pets at all.

“They make no effort to get them adopted, and they are wild now at the suggestion that maybe they should even try,” Robin Starr, chief executive of the Richmond SPCA, wrote in a blog post. “They want no impediment to their killing. . . . PETA is a huge, rich, mean bully.”

Perhaps eyes are beginning to open up and sight has been achieved! Praise the Lord, God bless all the shelter animals. Any and all efforts should be made to find original homes and if that is not possible, an effort should be made to adopt them out. "....despite a radical, pro-animal outlook that encourages veganism and abhors zoos, cares about pets at all...." HELLO!!!! There it is!! The ultimate agenda!!

Take some of the millions and millions of dollars collected on the premise of trying to help these animals, and actually do what you say you need all that money for! Help get these animals adopted out, help facilities establish therapy dog training programs....dont just sweep down and slaughter all these dogs that could be of great benefit to people that need therapy animals, simply because you are clearly against pet ownership, by your OWN admission.......“this selfish desire to possess animals and receive love from them . . . has created an overpopulation crisis.....". Your means do not justify the ends, the fulfillment of your agenda.

I find it so bizarre that they have so many valid points and negate these all by murdering what they claim to want to protect. It just boggles the mind even for someone who studies human behavior!

The number of animals they are killing compared to those being homed is staggering. I thought the Devore Animal Shelter here in CA was bad but this makes them look like angels. Their kill rate is about 50% but they try to find homes or rescue groups for the animals before they kill them. There is a huge number of homeless and abandoned animals in this area.

Good on the State of Virginia!

And just what pray tell is the domesticated dog for over 5000 yrs supposed to do if WE ALL SAW PETAS LIGHT? Be killed off by the hundreds of millions, as pet owners say WHOOPS how BAD OF ME to Own YOU. Here you go - here is the wild you just adore!!!! Prey to disease, starvation, love, forced to fend for themselves across the concrete desert of a humanity that now has none??

How any-one who calls themselves a dog lover could support an organization that publishes the above rhetoric is just beyond my comprehension.

I have been constantly disgusted by PETA. I was a member for a short time when I was 16. I quickly figured out that I did not belong there. I could never figure out why they never tried to sponsor free spay and neuter clinics. They only kill puppies/kittens and dogs/cats after the fact. I suppose it would be against their stance of owning pets. It would be an encouragement to get a pet if you could get it spayed or neutered for free.

There is one thing I agree with PETA on - I hate zoos, with animals taken from the wild and kept in confinement for human entertainment. That seems so cruel to me - beautiful, wild things meant to live free until they die instead spending their days and nights confined to cruel cages, tanks, pools and fences that prevent their desire to run, swim and fly all they want, hunt for food, breed, roam and migrate.

I still would have euthanized PETA members if that was my chihuahua.

Jeanie, allow me to play Devil's Advocate here and just present the flip side of the "zoo" coin.

Not all zoos are quality facilities, that is for certain. But there are really fabulous zoos around the country where the animals are cared for, researched and thoughtfully bred actually using pedigrees so the animals are not all inbred, and they are kept in open spaces rather than cages..... Something to just think about with THESE great facilities....There are animals that are disappearing by the hundreds of thousands every year, because HUMANS are encroaching into their living spaces, cutting down thousands of acres of jungles and rain forests where these animals are living. Until human population is controlled, and humans stop inhabiting and over running areas inhabited by animals, we as care givers of Earth and Gods Creatures, have to provide them an option, an alternative, so they do not disappear completely from existance.

Humans will never cease to reproduce, and populations of humans will continue to spread out all over the Earth, cutting and leveling and destroying land that belongs to the animals, so to speak.....one day, people will inhabit every square inch of available space on Earth....so what can we do? If we are going to continue to destroy where they live, we must provide sanctuaries and safe zones for the animals....and that is zoos. If you do not provide breeding grounds and care and animal management for the animals of Earth, your great, great grandkids will never see a elephant or a giraffe, or a hippo or rhino or gorillas in real life. Zoos are the last frontier for hundreds of species of animals and birds and fish.....

I know there are thousands of places where these poor animals are caged and mistreated. That is so wrong and must be corrected...There should be established standards of care and methods of practice for zoos, in order for them to operate. Animals in zoos should be in open space areas, not cages...This is another cause celeb PETA should get active in....establishing policies and procedures for zoo facilities, encouraging and presenting ways and means and methods on animal management, breeding, vet care, etc for all captive animals.....rather than trying to get me to eat veggies instead of meat.

Oh, I just couldn't disagree more with you, girl. You know I adore you but boy, my soul dies a little when I see a beautiful wild Lion or anything wild in a zoo - it just kills my soul. Zoos are not the answer and keeping a noble wild animal confined 24/7, with little life enrichment and no way to live up to his genetic programming, his innermost instincts, as humans trek by, stop for 5 minutes and go, isn't in anyway charitable for the poor wild animal.

Whatever natural instincts the wild zoo animal has are totally stymied by his artificial lifestyle. Making a wild animal, whose nature is to run, swim, fly for miles and miles, forage and hunt/kill, fight for his rights, breed at will, stay confined to a set boundary, a given space, is so fiercely alien to his nature that he'd be better off dead and seems the same as sentencing a human being to life in prison - the ultimate death penalty - the day-to-day relentlessly limited boundaries of someone else's choosing - for a whole lifetime. We all would rather be dead than live like that. You know the old phrase "Give me Liberty or give me death". What good is living if there is no ability to go our own way, no freedom of choice, no true joie de vivre from living this life?

These poor wild, confined zoo creatures have no life - no life-enriching activities, can't do any of the things they were bred to do and their spirit yearns for. Wild instincts just go unfulfilled. The wild things just while away their days at the whim of mankind, often pacing, standing in place for hours or rocking in utter boredom, too despondent to even breed.

We'd be better off using all the billions spent at and on zoos and aquariums helping the world's countries buy up the land for their own wild creatures to use to live their natural lives, run/roam, forage, hunt/kill, fight for rights and breed in the wild rather than trying to artificially replicate something that never can be truly replicated - keeping a wild animal mentally and physically fulfilled and contented in a confined space of at best a few acres and at worst, a few feet, with iron bars to look through.

From what I read, very few zoos themselves actually breed to release wild animals back into the wild but to sell to other zoos and circuses around the world - and those breeding programs are mostly only for the popular animals - while the rest go extinct. As for veterinary research, most of it in zoos is for success in breeding in confinement as I understand, and veterinary sciences are not really needed in the wild, for nature has its own answers and the malformed, seriously ill and injured, get to die, rather than live in a miserably weakened or confined condition.

I just can't see how wildlife benefits at all from merely existing in a human-created confined space, prevented from doing most of the wild things its body and spirit were born to live for.
