| storm anxiety Anyone have any suggestions: When a rain storm approaches my little [2 yr old] fellow starts running in tight circles, panting & pees & poops. I've tried confining him, distracting him & giving him ace promazine [vet perscribed]. Nothing seems to help. I live in Florida and our raining season is just beginning....... TU, nw |

No Longer a Member | I go thru the same thing with Giz..poor baby. When I see a storm in the forcast I know I will be asleep at work all the next day. He jumps up in my face trembling running back and forth across the bed, I swear you'd think he was about to stroke out. I worry bout him while at work and it starts raining but my grown kids are there to hold him. Don't know what causes it, all you can do is hold him close and turn the tv up a little. Looks like the little goomers would stop and think, you didn't let the thunder get them last time. |

| Uh-oh! I feel sorry for you. We had a chihuahua (she lived to be 17 ) and everytime it rained (it didn't even have to thunder) she would jump off the bed (if it was night) and start running back and forth and get under the bed and rub the top of her nose raw on the carpet. I'd try to hold her, but she was so upset that she'd struggle to get down so she could run back and forth again. Like I said, it didn't even have to thunder. She could smell the rain. She would walk up to the door and put her nose to the crack and smell it. It was pitiful. |

| Please don't give Ace Hi, I understand that your baby is afraid of thunder storms, mine is too. As you can see lots of other little ones have minor breakdowns, too. I would strongly advise against giving a small dog Ace. It is a drug I am very familiar with as a horse tranquilizer. It is extremely powerful, and has a strange way of magnifying whatever an animal's mental state is immediately prior to the drug taking effect. So, if you administer Ace to an animal that is already in a fearful state, the fear becomes intensified. I have been involved with horses since 1968, and my husband is a racehorse trainer who grew up on a horse and cattle farm. I would suggest avoiding drugs. If your little one has a crate, try putting baby in the crate, then putting the crate in the bathtub (empty tub, of course). Some dogs find comfort hiding out like this until the storm blows over. Good luck. |

| I use something called Rescue Remedy made by Bach Flower Essences. It's a natural homeopathic medicine in liquid form that decreases anxiety in people and can be used on pets. My Yorkie seems fine with thunderstorms but my Beagle gets very nervous and anxious. I give him a couple of drops of Rescue Remedy and he calms down and usually goes to sleep. It's perfectly safe and you can get it all most Herb/Health food markets.
