| Ready to make neutering appt. I am getting ready to make Peanut's appt for neutering. My question is how do I tell my vet I do not want him to stay overnight? They do have techs that live on site, but I do not feel comfortable leaving Peanut all night. I figure if he is done first thing in the morning and comes home that evening he should be fine. I asked my breeder what to do about him staying over night and she said no way does any of her dog stay over night at the vets unless there is a problem and she works for a vet. I don't want to sound like some crazy lady when I make this appt. how would you handle this? Thanks for any input. |

| I would just say in a very nice voice when you call, tell them that if you promise to keep Peanut confined and not let him jump up and down on and off the couch and/or bed and you promise not to let him walk up and down stairs, is there anyway they will let you bring him home instead of spending the night. The whole reason they want the dogs to spend the night is because they don't trust the owners to keep the dog confined and not let them do things like stairs and jump on and off the couch/bed. I'm sure if you tell them that you are aware of this and you PROMISE to not let him do these things, then they'll let you bring him home. That is what my vet did, at least. I promised her all these things and she let me bring Hobbs home the night after his surgery even though she makes all the other dogs spend the night. |

| It'll be 3 weeks tomorrow since Piccolo was neutered. They wanted him to stay overnight but I said =no way ! I picked him up at 6p.m and he was fine. They also pulled out 3 of his baby teeth and microchipped him. Take him home. Piccolo's surgery icluded overnight stay and I paid almost $600 for it but I didn't care and took him home. I bought nice cotton pjs so he couldn't lick his stiches and he was great.

| I would think that he would be sleepy when he came home. Do they give them pain meds? My other dog (sheppard mix) was spayed 10 years ago and the vets did not keep her over night, she sleep from the time she was in the car until the next morning and she was fine. |

Well, Hobbs was not sleepy at all when I brought him home from his neutering! He didn't even act like he had had surgery!!!!!!! I really had to make a conscious effort to follow the doctor's orders and not let him go up and down stairs and not let him jump on/off the couch and bed. | |

| Have you called your vet yet to ask them if you can bring Peanut home after his surgery and not have him spend the night? |

| No I have not called the vets yet. I'm still figuring out what to say. I still have contact with the breeder I got Peanut from and she said there is no reason why he needs to be there overnight unless there is a problem. I think Peanut would be so upset being there overnight when he is so use to being at home in bed |

If I was you, I would just make the appointment to take him in for pre-op bloodwork the night before. That's all you have to do - you don't need to discuss your wishes for the surgery with the receptionist. Take him in for the pre-op bloodwork the night before and discuss the procedure with the VET at that time - they will likely have some forms for you to sign, etc. and will go over what you do and don't want (IV's, etc.) Tell them you wish to pick him up at hte end of the day. That's all I did and I had ZERO problem. The vet said that they usually do keep them overnight, but I said I really didn't see the point if there wasn't going to be anyone there through the night. I felt the situation was crappy enough as it were without having to leave him in a strange place alone all night. My vet was fine with it and they just scheduled him for a post-op check up for first thing the next morning to check his stitches (this was no extra cost). I really don't see how any vet can NOT let you take your dog home... doesn't make sense to me, it's YOUR dog.

| I just called the vets about leaving Peanut overnight when neutering. They said no way could I pick him up that night. The girl I spoke to said they can get nippy with the anesthesia. She checked with the vet and they said no. She told me they have techs that live on site and they watch them, but I asked her do they watch him all night along? She said no, they check in on them. I would be watching him all night because he sleeps right beside me. What should I do? I am shaking I am so upset Vicki |

| Just tell them you want to pick him up - period. I didn't feel comfartable leaving Piccolo overnight. I watched him myself. If something had gone wrong, I would have taken him to emergency hospital. This is ridiculous ! Even if somebody checks on him, how often ? And if something happens, the techs have to call the vet anyway and it takes more time then taking him yourself. I wouldn't leave him there.

| I really don't understand how they can say no. And techs are NOT vets. And I have NEVER heard of one of our babies getting nippy when coming out of aneasthesia - they're sleepy and want to be cuddled! If you are dropping the dog off first thing in the morning and assuming that they complete the surgery at least before noon, then he should be out of the aneasthesia for at least 4 hours before you go pick him up. I just don't get it.. it's actually making me a little annoyed... lol Maybe you should call around to other vets in your area and see what their policy is... If it was sooo critical that a dog stay overnight after a standard surgery like that, then why do so many vets allow the dog to go home at the end of the day? Maybe you should ask to speak to a vet about this rather than the reception. Are you going to have pre-op bloodwork done?

| I spoke to the office manager and she asked the vet about him comming home and the vet said no. I called two other vets and they let them home the same day. I am really annoyed also. My husband said call another vet. I would really like to find a vet that does a lot with small breeds. |

| You bet I will be going to another vet. I see no reason for a overnight stay and the other vets that I called were a little surprised that my vet would have him stay overnight. I will have to do a office visit first, but thats ok because I then get to feel things out insteed of just dropping him off to go under the knife. |

| I made the appointment I had Peanut at the new vet yesterday for a visit and his rabies shot. He did great! I really liked the vet and how we were treated. I explained that he was here to be checked before neutering and they were fine with that. They went over everything with me and agreed there was no reason for him to stay the night. They do request you to do the pre op blood work which I was going to do and they give pain meds to give at home. He did great with the rabies shot too, not even a peep out of him and as of this morning no reactions. So we are scheduled for neutering on Nov. 17 at 8:30am I know it is going to be hard to hand him over but I know it is best for him and they are good vets. |
