If I was you, I would just make the appointment to take him in for pre-op bloodwork the night before. That's all you have to do - you don't need to discuss your wishes for the surgery with the receptionist. Take him in for the pre-op bloodwork the night before and discuss the procedure with the VET at that time - they will likely have some forms for you to sign, etc. and will go over what you do and don't want (IV's, etc.) Tell them you wish to pick him up at hte end of the day. That's all I did and I had ZERO problem. The vet said that they usually do keep them overnight, but I said I really didn't see the point if there wasn't going to be anyone there through the night. I felt the situation was crappy enough as it were without having to leave him in a strange place alone all night. My vet was fine with it and they just scheduled him for a post-op check up for first thing the next morning to check his stitches (this was no extra cost). I really don't see how any vet can NOT let you take your dog home... doesn't make sense to me, it's YOUR dog.
