| Hiking with Yorkies Hi! I have 2 10 month old Yorkies, they are both healthy & full of energy. I want to take them on a 4 mile hike this weekend. Is this something that maybe too strenuous for them? Its 2.5 miles and the incline is 1200 ft its a slow but steady incline. Would you see any reasons for problems or concerns with taking them? |

| I think it would be fine. Make sure you take LOTS of water for them. It would be ashame for them to get up there and get dehydrated. Generally yorkies will let you know when they are tired and have had enough walking. Just make sure you pay extra attention to their needs while you are on the hike. Be prepared to pick them up if they act like they are getting tired. Otherwise, I think that they would have a fun time!!! |

| I took Rocky hiking the last time we went, and he loved it. I just made sure he had alot of water and treats (of course). Plus, I have a backpack style dog carrier that I put him in when he got tried. |

| I know this has been said before, but don't think it can be said enough... water, water, water As long as you take plenty of drinking water along, I think they'll be fine. Also, are they up to date on their flea/tick prevention?

| I've heard that if you take dogs that aren't fully grown on too strenuous a walk you can do damage to them - joints and bones and whatnot. Tho' before I was told this I used to take dougal for long walks before he was fully grown and it hasn't exactly stunted his growth - he's 15lbs now at three years old. At least with yorkies if they get too tired you can carry them easily enough.

| Hiking HI! I've taken Max for day hikes up mountains 1000+ feet... he loves it. In fact, he's quite the sportster. He never needs to be carried or anything ever.. and prefers to walk/run. The only thing I would caution ... keep them on the leash, its usually regulated anyway, but there is another more important reason: you don't want a cougar or any other wild fox/wild bird etc. snatching your little one while he's off sniffing in the trees, or running after squirrels. I've let Max off the leash in open areas, and he generally stays near anyway, but I'm always cautious. The other thing to keep in mind besides water, and the leash is watch for stuff getting stuck in his fur, like sticks or burrs, or thorn bushes. I keep Max's fur short (puppy cut) to avoid tangles. I hope you have tonnes of fun out in the wild with your furbaby! I sure do! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/ima...ilies/woof.gif

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | I've never taken my boys on that strenuous of a hike, but I like the idea! 2.5 miles shouldn't be too strenuous. They will probably love it. Not sure what kind of creatures you have in your woods, but I'd be real watchful of predators.

| I haven't taken Kona on any hikes yet, but I plan to. We just wanted to wait till she had all her shots. We bought a little carrier that we could put her in when she gets tired. I can't wait to try it out. Please let me know how it goes. |

| Are u kidding? Look at the size of these darlings. They were not meant to hike that far- watch their pads on their feet as well as any ticks. In my experience, yorkies don't know when to stop and can easily tire themselves out. I would be real careful about this adventure! |

| Bring plenty of water, keep your babies leashed and be prepared to carry them when they tire. Remember that in the woods you WILL encounter (besides ticks) hawks, snakes and depending on where you live cougars too. I live in the suburbs of NJ and have hawks living on my property; they have even circled my KIDS who are all 15 years and older--a little Yorkie would get snatched for sure! If you take precautions and are willing to pick up and carry your Yorkie for the BULK of the hike, go for it. You probably won't have to carry your babies, but what if what if what if--be sure you can for "just in case." If you can carry your furbaby and water, go for it. |

| As long as y\ou are prepared to carry them, it should be fun for all. I think my guys cover 2.5 miles just chasing each other around. I would also take along nutrical or something sweet, just in case. |
