| Recipe from Veterinary dietician!! Today I was given a recipe from a vet. dietitian in the UK. Toots has lots of food sensitivities and so I was referred to this dietitian by my vet. The vet told me that he was well respected and lectured at the veterinery college. This is the recipe given for one day: 800g zucchini (Boiled in water without salt and then drained) 200g Raw shredded carrot 20g minced turkey, broiled in pan with no salt or oil 1 and a half tsps. BalanceIt Divide into 3 or 4 meals during the day Firstly, how is she going to eat so much zucchini!! It is close to 2lbs of this vegetable per day!! She has never wanted to eat it in the past either. Another thing, I was told years ago by a dietitian (not a pet dietitian) that carrots are the one food that are better cooked, as you can absorb the carotene far better. I assume that this applies to pets as well? This vet dietitian imports BalanceIt and it is going to cost me a fortune due to postage and import duties! I see the vet diets site, which some of the members are using, is recommending Chef Canine Complete now instead of BalanceIt, which is a lot cheaper. I also notice that it is mentioned on the Chef Canine Complete web page that the ingredients are not sourced in China (BalanceIt ingredients are sourced in China). Can anyone tell me what the concern is with ingredients sourced in China. I am a little worried about how little protein there is in this new diet, but she is a senior dog and I know they need less protein. What do you think of the amount given and the diet in general? | I replied on your other thread but would not worry about the diet formulation. Did you try it? I mean without the balance it?

| Thanks for your replies. Sorry about the duplication! I haven't tried the diet yet. I have to say I am reluctant as she hates zucchini! Do I have a battle of wills with her and wait until she is so hungry that she has to try it? I think it is asking a lot of her to make her eat close on two pounds of a vegetable she hates. All I wanted from the nutritionist was a diet that cut out foods that are known to upset the digestion of sensitive, allergic dogs like her and to make sure that what I was feeding her was correct for her her age and was balanced. I also asked for some alternatives, so that I could vary her meals. His reply to this was 'conforming to the requests has proved quite difficult'! I don't see that asking for some alternatives can be so difficult. I am seriously thinking of trying petdiets now! The thing is I have spent a lot of money consulting this veterinary dietitian!!! Thanks again for your replies. |

I don't know why you couldn't do turkey and sweet potato. Or turkey and peas. Or turkey and butternut squash. I requested variety and commercial food options for my boys. For my allergy dog, it is just pretty hard to do, so I don't think your vet was that far off. I would try the diet first. Zucchini has a lot of water in it do it may not take that much volume to meet the weight. I notice when I do butternut squash or potatoes it seems like a lot. My dogs have no problem eating every last morsel on their plates and are all very lean. In fact one of them is always too thin.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'd use the Chef Canine Complete, I like the fact that none of their ingredients come from China. Did you tell the nutritionist that your dog hates zucchini? I'd try the receipt and see if the dog liked it, mixed with the turkey and carrots he might like it just fine. If not, I'd call the nutritionist, I'm sure there are numerous things you can substitute. You are carrot about the carrots, more vitamins are available if cooked, but I doubt it will make a big difference if you are adding a supplement. I wish he had told you why he's choosing those ingredients.

| Thank you so much for all these replies - they are very helpful. I have asked the vet to speak to the vet. dietitian about my issues (it is not the correct protocol over here (UK) to speak directly to the dietition!!?)and am waiting to hear from him. I have been reading a book by Dr Donald Strombeck 'Home-prepared Dog and Cat Diets'. He feels that senior dogs need a little extra protein! However he may be speaking generally and not be including particular breeds like Yorkies that are prone to bladder problems, but I am feeling concerned about giving her so little protein. I am wondering if I should give her a teaspoon or two of zucchini a day to see if she builds up a tolerance? I just wish I could discuss all this with the dietitian personally. Honestly they are so fussy about doing the 'correct thing' over here. Thanks 107barney for letting me know about the chick pea used in Chefs Canine Complete. This may well be a problem seeing she is so allergic. Have there being any deaths attributed to BalanceIt? I really appreciate all your help. Thanks so much. |

| Good evening! I'm not sure whether this is anything to do with anything at all - but I started a thread on the 'Europe' forum the other day about a new food I've started Harry on... Natural Instinct - Frozen raw human-grade meat dog food, the dog breeders' choice. He absolutely love, love, loves it... xx

Btw, if you ever need something shipped from over here and if it'd be cheaper for me to ship it to you, rather than the vendor themselves - I'd be happy to help you out! Anything for these babies and their wonderful owners!

| Thank you once again for these helpful replies. I apologize for taking so long to reply. I have an Internet connection issue, which is so annoying. I want to say a special thank you to you, Anne, for your very kind offer. You are an angel! (Anne helped me when I first joined YT years ago and was having problems with Tootsy's digestive issues. She recommended Susan at 'Ask Ariel' and Susan was a great help. ) I will see what the dietitian has to say and what he charges to import the supplement. I would be so grateful for your help in sending the supplement to me, should the dietitian try to make an additional profit on it himself. I really appreciate this, Anne. You really are a special person. I am going to try giving her 1 Tablespoon of zucchini each day and see if she reacts to it again. Perhaps giving her half a zucchini was too much to start with, even though it was a small one. Then, if I find that the dietitian is of no further help, I will go to petdiets.com. I will keep you all informed as to how things go. It may be of help to someone else on the board with an allergic dog with food sensitivities. Thanks again. xxx |
