All I wanted from the nutritionist was a diet that cut out foods that are known to upset the digestion of sensitive, allergic dogs like her and to make sure that what I was feeding her was correct for her her age and was balanced. I also asked for some alternatives, so that I could vary her meals. His reply to this was 'conforming to the requests has proved quite difficult'! I don't see that asking for some alternatives can be so difficult. I am seriously thinking of trying petdiets now! The thing is I have spent a lot of money consulting this veterinary dietitian!!! It depends on the dog. I have done consults with petdiets on three dogs. The older boy needed a lower fat diet because of pancreatitis and the younger boy needs a diet for bladder stone prevention. Dr Remillard made diets for them with lists of things I could substitute with if I wanted to. But for the third dog who has allergies, we don't have too many changes we can make. There are a few. We have her on chicken, peas, and sweet potatoes now. She's been through every meat and vegetarian option.
I don't know why you couldn't do turkey and sweet potato. Or turkey and peas. Or turkey and butternut squash. I requested variety and commercial food options for my boys. For my allergy dog, it is just pretty hard to do, so I don't think your vet was that far off. I would try the diet first. Zucchini has a lot of water in it do it may not take that much volume to meet the weight. I notice when I do butternut squash or potatoes it seems like a lot. My dogs have no problem eating every last morsel on their plates and are all very lean. In fact one of them is always too thin.
