| Chicken Allergy? My Smokie has been itching for a couple of months. I took him to the vet he had red legions on him and tested positive for ringworms. He was prescribed an anti-fungal shampoo to give him a bath 3 times a week. Lather him up and let it sit on him for 15 minutes and then rinse. I did this for a few weeks. I took him for his follow-up two weeks later. I was told when the red spots are gone I can stop using the shampoo. I took him back because he was still itching although most of the red spots are gone. I was then told he has allergies and to continue with the shampoo and give him Benadryl twice a day. I am also putting salmon and coconut oil in his food. I have been doing this for a little over two weeks. He is still itching not as much but sometimes he scratch to the point of leaving red spots. He licks his paws at times also. Not excessive but he does lick them and he drags his face across the carpet at times. I have heard a lot of dogs are allergic to chicken. All of Smokies food has been chicken based since I brought him home. He is 11 months old and I brought him home when he was 3 months old. I am wondering if he is allergic to chicken. I am considering changing his food to salmon based and no grains, wheat, or poultry. Has anyone experienced this with their baby? He doesn't seem to be miserable, but I just want the scratching to stop. All ideas or suggestions are welcomed.... |

| He could be allergic to chicken, but check the ingredients much more likely to be sensitive to corn, wheat or soy. Ringworm takes a while to get rid of - did they ever have you put an ointment on the actual ring lesion like lotrimin? |

| No the vet didn't tell me to use any ointment like lotrimin. When I went to his follow-up appt most of the legions were gone. So they told me to continue using the shampoo. After all red spots were gone I could discontinue using it. I am using an ointment called sulfodene. When I check his skin and he has scratched to the point of red marks I put the sulfodene on him. He then rubs his face and neck on the carpet for a little bit. I check his treats to make sure they do not have soy, wheat, or corn. He is eating Organix food with chicken, peas, and flaxseed. No corn, wheat, grain-free. I just transitioned him to adult dog food. His puppy food was Same brand, no soy, wheat, or corn. I went through his treats and removed any that had chicken. |

| Food allergies are rare it is probably an environmental allergy. Benadryl is not going to do much given twice a day. I think he needs to go back to the vet.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You have a few possible things going on here. First, I can't believe they treated ringworm w/ just a shampoo???!!! YIKES. It's usually treated w/ Diflucan x 6 full weeks, then you retest the skin by growing out a skin scraping in culture for 10 days. To me, it sounds like it's either not gone (bc it was never really treated in the first place) or - he actually has pyoderma, which is a skin bacterial infection that results in red patches and itchiness. Allergies of any kind would be VERY rare and nearly unheard of in an 11 mth old dog. The paw licking and itching does point to it though. Food allergies are very rare. You could try switching to something else and seeing what happens - no harm in that...I'd recommend something like Natures Logic Venison kibble or something. Giving Benadryl 2x a day won't do enough, it needs to be giving 4x a day due to its short half life. Benadryl almost never works well for allergies in dogs, it's just not powerful enough.
