| high calorie treats? I'm looking for suggestions of high calorie treats to help put some weight on my skinny foster guy Baby. I don't want to give a high calorie food because I free feed & don't want my own pups gaining weight. I leery of using nutri-cal because I'm not looking to give him extra sugar. Any ideas?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | You could give little globs of peanut butter and little pieces of cheese, both of which are palatable and calorie dense. BUT, don't be afraid (at all) of using the Nutri-Cal - it's actually a *very* good nutrient-dense supplement - it's not just sugar at all, not even close. Here are it's ingreds and analysis: Minimum Guaranteed Analysis Crude Protein (0.68%) 40.80 mg Iodine (0.0080%) 0.48 mg Crude Fat (28.14%) 1688.40 mg Vitamin A 734 IU Moisture (14.21%) 852.60 mg Vitamin D 55 IU Ash (0.50%) 30.00 mg Vitamin E 5 IU Calcium (0.0026%) 0.16 mg Vitamin B1 (thiamine) 1.52 mg Phosphorus (0.0003%) 0.02 mg Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) 0.011 mg Potassium (0.0025%) 0.15 mg Pantothenic Acid 1.74 mg Sodium (0.0168%) 1.01 mg Niacin 1.90 mg Chloride (0.0055%) 0.33 mg Vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) 0.73 mg Magnesium (0.0063%) 0.38 mg Folic Acid 0.19 mg Iron (0.0088%) 0.53 mg Vitamin B12 (cyanobalamin) 1.83 mcg Manganese (0.0158%) 0.95 mg INGREDIENTS: Corn Syrup, Soybean Oil (source of LA and ALA), Malt Syrup, Cod Liver Oil (source of EPA and DHA), Cane Molasses, Methylcellulose, Water, Gelatin By-Products, dl-Alpha Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E Supplement), Sodium Benzoate (a preservative), Manganese Sulfate, Ferric Ammonium Citrate, Thiamine Hydrochloride, Niacin, Calcium Pantothenate (source of Calcium and Pantothenic Acid), Magnesium Sulfate, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D3 Supplement, Potassium Iodide (source of Iodine and Potassium), Riboflavin 5’-Phosphate Sodium (source of Vitamin B2 and Phosphorus), Folic Acid and Vitamin B12 Supplement).

| I know puppy food does have more calories so I wonder if treats directed to puppy's would have more calories. It might be something to look at.

| Unless he is "bone sticking out" skinny, looking malnourished, I wouldn't worry so much about trying to put weight ON him. Concentrate on making sure he has an adequate amount of good quality food for his nutritional needs, and his body will balance out. When you look for high calorie treats, be careful that they don't have too high of fat content that could lead to gastro problems or pancreatitis. Some doggies are just meant to be more slim. My Tiki is that way, and her vet says it is not a bad thing at all, and that he prefers to see them this way than overweight.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Yes, I realize what it has in it -- that's why I posted it, lol! Besides sugar, there are a ton of other beneficial things in it. It's not the end of the world to give dogs carbs when they need to gain weight.

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | One word of caution when using Nutrical: Even in an otherwise healthy dog, a quick rise in blood sugar can lead to a rebound hypoglycemia. It should be followed by a small amount protein such as boiled shredded chicken to help minimize the swings.

| Tried the nutrical, he won't touch it. He's 3 & was living on chicken & cheese only when I got him. I have him on Earthborn holistic meadow feast & he gobbles it up. He's gained 2 oz in the month he's been here. I would like him to gain a bit faster.
