| Sick Baby , I need support Some people laugh at the way I worry about 11 year old Yorkie. Three weeks ago myself and my wife were out of town when we received a call from my mother in law at 3 am in the morning, Angel our 11 year old 3 pound Yorkie was having a Grand Mah seizure. She was rushed to the Vets and he had to use Valium to get her to calm down plus various shots for a 107 Temp. After a couple of days of test it was determined that her liver functions were way off which intern infected her brain. For 11 days she has been on Liver medication named Demamarin to get the functions right, The Vet stated after 30 days the meds will have her Liver functioning properly. She is also on a fourth of a tablet of Primadone twice a day forever for seizures. After 11 days she stumbles around like she is drunk or confused, then 5 minutes later she will bark and run across the backyard because someone is waking by the fence. Has anyone else been through this. Maybe I am not giving the meds enough time. Thanks, Depressed 57 Year Old Biker in Louisiana |

| It wouldn't hurt to have her evaluated by an internal medicine specialist if you want the very best care available. Yorkies are very prone to liver problems. This usually manifests as a portosystemic shunt or microvascular dysplasia when they are young. It is still theoretcially possible that that is what is going on here though. Has she been bile acids tested? The liver does seem to encounter problems as pups age though. there is really a whole list of things that it could be. Denosyl and Marin are good. Lactulose can be added if she is having neurological symptoms.

| Reply She has had all kinds of test. I totally trust the Vet, who is also a Personal friend. He diagnosed her with asyphilitise of the brain. I think that it is the right term but maybe not a good spelling. he said the liver toxins caused a brain infection. So that is why the liver med for 30 days, and antibiotics twice a day for 14 days. I am more worried about her clumsiness. Thanks for the reply |

YT 2000 Club Donating Member | No laughter here BigDi. Just a heartfelt well wish for the health of your pup. 11 years young, is too young to be going through this (in our hearts and minds). I'm so sorry I don't have specific experience to share, but just want you to know that your voice and your concern has been heard . Perhaps as Ellie May posted a few more days are needed for these med's to kick in,

| This dog needs more than your regular vet. Internal medicine and/or neurology. Best wishes and welcome to YT.

| I believe he needs to be seen by a specialist. You might want to look into LSU. Good luck!

| I agree with others here, your baby needs a specialist. There are other conditions that yorkies are prone to that raise liver enzymes that are Not liver conditions. AAI, Chiari & GME can & most often cause liver enzymes to elevate. Did your girl recently have vaccinations ? if yes, this could be GME witch is an infection in the brain & causes liver enzymes to elevate so your vet could very well have his diagnosis completely backwards as has happened MANY times her on YT. Please see a Specialist ASAP. |

| No Mame no recent vaccines. We got her when she was 2 years old, nine years ago. She had small, short seizures one every 6 months or so. She was tested and determined that she has low blood sugar levels when she did not eat. Over the years they had got frequent as once a month. This was the first time she had a Grand Mah. The Vet told us that after an hour in a bad seizure in Combination of a 107 Temp she is lucky not to have permanent brain damage. From what I can find on the web the anti seizure med she is on twice a day can cause the slight stubbling and the disorientation. |

| Actually these things ARE rare. We see them on here because this is a forum for sick and injured pups. People google and find YT. Also, I might add that I keep seeing people with pups with neuro condtions questioned about vaccines...there is NO research data to date to indicate that vaccines have anything to do with GME and other conditions like it. I have grave concerns when I keep seeing this as people are being made to believe their dogs will get sick and die from vaccines, when they are more likely to get sick and die from NOT being vaccinated!

| According to the neurologist at WSU, they are Not rare. And are too often misdiagnosed. |

| Ask that vet the percentage! While that condition is not rare, it is not a common occurence in the breed. Common would be the numbers of yorkies with LP!

| My Angel is now a True Angel I posted a couple of weeks back about My Little Angel being so sick from a bad liver and contracting encephalitis of the brain. My poor baby put up a brave fight for 4 weeks. She took a turn for the worst this past Thursday and stopped eating or drinking. We started giving her peadilite with a syringe and made her lick nutracal for vitamins. Repeated this all through good Friday,, Nothing GOOD about GOOD Friday. We took her to the Vet first thing Saturday morning because she had gotten to the point of not being able to walk without running into things . After listening it was determined she was now having congestive heart problems, her cataracts were to the point she was totally blind. Through tear filled eyes we had her put to sleep. I still cry when I walk in the backyard and look at her grave. That little 3 pound, eleven year old Yorkie has left a huge hole in my heart for sure. |
