| Raw Food Diet for Dogs Have ya'll ever seen that raw food diet in the fridge at your local pet store~? Our local store has had it for a while. I tried the medallians during his first year when we kept changing food. He loved it, but his poo stank to high heavens. Me not being a meat eater, was relucant about trying it. I took it back tho. I saw tonight that they had meat bones of bison or beef. I almost got one for Maxwell, but was undecided when I saw the red meat on the beef one. The bison bone didn't have any meat I could see. I also worried about him getting the bone portion caught in his throat. What do ya'll think about this~? Is it good or bad~? Lately, I am going to "Three Dog Bakery" to get him the rawhide bones that are more naturally made and healthier for him. |

| Vinnie has been eating the Nature's Variety medallions for about 5-6 years now and LOVES them. We also do Primal sometimes (a similar concept but they are frozen nuggets instead). I like the premade stuff mainly because it saves time and has everything they need (specifically, the ground up bone). However, it's also pretty easy to prepare raw food from scratch, although obviously more time-consuming than just thawing out the medallions. What I do is get a variety of meat from the store (including organ meat). Sometimes I very lightly cook it (just to brown the outside, but the inside is still raw). I add to their dish plain pumpkin, some steamed veggies (very small amount because these will give them gas), and plain whole-fat yogurt. I vary the meat, but it will include beef heart, chicken livers, beef liver, lamb, bison, chicken, turkey, and beef. I avoid pork (too fatty) and anything processed. To ensure they get the right nutrients, I also add some ground up bone meal to their food as well as a couple of whole food supplements recommended by my vet. The bone meal is VERY important to ensure they get the calcium they need. Then, to top all this off at least once a week they get a raw marrow bone. These things smell disguesting (you can get them in your meat department) but my guys LOVE them. I get small ones that are easy for them to get the marrow out of and then chew on for a few hours. So, that's how we do raw. I will admit that it totally disguests me, especially the organ meat. I've been a vegetarian for at least 15 years and never imagined in my wildest dreams that I would be chopping up raw meat to serve to my dogs. The things we do for love!

| I feed home cooked to my diabetic, kibble to the others. The all get a chicken wing or 2 through out the week for the health of their teeth as well as raw bones and some organ meat here and there. I would love to feed all raw, I feel overall it is the best I could offer. The cost for me with a pack of 8 is just to much.

| Dexter is on a Prey Model Raw diet, which is what dogs bodies are designed to digest. He eats all raw meat, bones and organs. i have never had a dog thats breath (or poop) smell so NON stinky! my sister is a vegan and when she looks after him he eats the midallions so she doesn't have to look at raw meat, but he always ends up stinking really badly even from the midallions. |

| I feed Primal as well as Stella & Chewy's. He gets it as breakfast about 3x a week as I currently can't afford to feed my 15lb dog pre-made raw full time and honestly don't have the energy, nor want to put in the effort to feed PMR. So he gets kibble with wet food when we don't feed the raw.

| Oh. yeah, Stella & Chewy's is awesome too! I get their treats (the little Canine Crunch ones) and the dehydrated dinners for when we travel. The hardest part about feeding raw is if you travel or camp like we do. But the Stella & Chewy's lamb and beef dinners are perfect. They seem to taste great (according to Vinnie & Alex) and they don't require any refrigeration. Just add water and you're set. I agree that all of the raw feeding is definitely not cheap, but there are some ways to cut corners. I know a lot of people make deals with local butchers to get some of the products that are discarded (such as marrow bones and organ meats). A lot of times, these items are just thrown away. Also, I buy in bulk and then freeze portions of meat, defrosting it as needed. My local Shoppers has some great deals on meat and I just periodically stock up when things are on sale. By combining the Nature's Variety medallions and Primal Nuggets with some home cooked food, I probably save about $40/month feeding two dogs. Although, to be honest, the real reason I do this is because I just LOVE cooking for them. They are the best little eaters and I actually find it fun to cook up meals for my dogs because they are so genuinely appreciative. Sounds crazy, I know, but it's true!

| I feed prey model raw. It is great! My GSD who even on grain free kibble has large and smelly poops, now has small and almost smell-less poops, that is plus for me! Health wise it is great as well, but does take extra planning. |

I, also, feed PMR (Prey Model RAW), which consists only of raw meat and bones. There are many benefits to this species appropriate diet - not the lest of which is less poo and very little stench because the dog is using most of what s/he eats for fuel - therefore less waste! Regarding bison or beef bone, these are weight-bearing bones that are too dense for any dog's teeth, and moreso for a small toy breed. We call them 'wreck' bones, as they can break (and probably will) teeth of any sized dog. There is a PMR group here on YT - please CLICK HERE to join us and learn more.
