| Dental today for Gizmo Please keep Gizmo in your thoughts today. He's having a dental done. He does fine under anesthesia. It's the same place, medicine, procedure as his neuter. However, with these little guys, you always worry. Thank you.

The vet says he has some plaque now, and wants to examine his teeth more thoroughly in case there's another problem there. He also has a lot of allergy-sinus issues and the vet thinks that the dental will help with that as well.

| Home Safe and Sound Gizmo's home now and happily playing. The vet said that he has a serious problem with the enamel on his teeth. It's very soft and gets minute little cracks that cause the staining. It's like he had distemper as a puppy, but he didn't. Most likely it's a genetic issue. We just need to get them checked every so often. We've kept his tartar down to almost nothing with the brushing we do, but there's not much to do about the enamel. He said that he doesn't see this much and it's rare, so if anyone has any suggestions, we're open. Thanks for your positive thoughts today.

| Just now seeing this. I am glad Gizmo did good today. I am sorry about the problem with his enamel. I know how we all worry about every little thing with our babies.

| Thank you for your kind words. Yes, we do worry about our little ones, don't we? I have a little more information now. It's called enamel hypoplasia, and he has a pretty severe case of it. It's frequently found in puppy mill puppies. (We thought we bought Gizmo from a reputable breeder, but found out later that there were many things we should have questioned.) It's also often caused by distemper in a puppy (he did not have this), and by the use of certain antibiotics such as tetracycline as little puppies or the mom while she was carrying the litter. (These I don't know about.). Gizmo's is widespread over all of his teeth, so fillings and crowns are not really a viable option. The vet says he's not in pain (good to know!) and there's no reason other than cosmetic to do anything at this point. So, we're letting it ride for now and continuing to brush his teeth regularly and watch for problems.

| Glad to hear that Gizmo is doing fine. I hope he doesn't have too much trouble or pain in the future with the enamel.

| Judy, I am just now seeing this thread. Happy to hear that Gizmo did well for his cleaning and exam and is home with his mom now. I have heard of this condition...especially from the use of Tetracycline. I certainly hope all is well and stays well for your Gizmo boy...just keep doing all you can to keep him and his teeth happy and healthy. Winston sends puppy kisses!!!
