| Poopy Puppy Advise Needed Please I have had my new pup for about 3 weeks now. He has now made the transition to Innova and is eating the same as my 9 month old yorkie. He is 5 months old and the potty training is extremely slow with him....I am taking them both outside constantly and he gets most of his pee done outside. The poo I know from experience takes longer but my concern/question is this.....he is pooing in the wee wee hours of the morning. Every night since I have had him he poos during sleep time. He is one the same feeding schedule as my other yorkie that poos on schedule every morning and once in awhile at night after dinner. My new pup poos 2-3 times throughout the night between 12am and 4:30am. He is finally mostly getting it on the pee pads but not always. I want to know how do I get his poop schedule to change to the daylight hours? Has anyone else had this problem and solved it? It's bad enough to feel like my life is filled with poo.....hahaha! But to have to get up 3 times a night and clean it up is a total drag.....Hope someone can help me.

| In order to change his poop schedule you will need to change his feeding schedule. I personally believe that he will eventually be able to hold it all night. Meanwhile, I would give him a big enough area to accomodate a pee pad for him to use in the night. My puppies are in a 4x4 x pen with a pee pad at pne end. they use that in the night. here is a picture of my puppy pen. IMG_1600 (750 x 562).jpg |

| That's a great set up. I will have to figure out a way to accommodate something like that in my little place. Thank you for sharing that wonderful x pen idea JeanieK. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to exactly alter his feeding schedule. I have been feeding him/them in the morning right after we get back from the morning potty and then again around 12-1 in the afternoon and then a third time around 4-5pm. Is that too often? What times do other people feed their 5 month old pups and at what age do you think he will be able to hold it through the night? My other pup was doing it at 4 months of age.

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | That seems like a good feeding schedule for times. I wonder if you're feeding too much? Do you have a sense of how long it takes him to poo after you feed him at other times of the day? Seems like he's got plenty of time after that 5 p.m. feeding.

Well yesterday he pooed at 2pm on Derby's little rug bed.....arah! And that has been it since my 2-3 times getting up in the middle of the night to clean up after him. So would that 2pm poo have been from the morning feeding at 8am?

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Yeah. So you may be looking at 6 hours. I'm not sure if that's average or not for a puppy. Do you typically put him down for the night before 11? If so, maybe try making the last feeding an hour earlier. At least for now. Actually, I just googled, and found one site that said they should poop 20 minutes to 1 hour after meals. Not sure what that means for you.

Really? My goodness, then that means my other pup is off too. He typically goes into his crate with the door of it open around 8pm.....sometimes a little earlier and sometimes a little bit later but never after 8:30 or so. They play so hard during the day, they are pretty worn out. I've heard that taking them on walks helps to stimulate their bowels but he isn't too fond of the leash yet so I need to work on that but I figured playing would do the same thing......?

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | The site I googled also says all dogs are different. Ugh. Some 20 mins. Some 6 hours. I'll bet things will start to normalize after you get the walks down. It does help them to go.

| Make sure you do check to see if you are feeding him the correct amount. They are usually around 1/4 cup that isn't much. And I would say you need to teach him to walk after eating for that evening meal so that you do get him on a different schedule. That really makes a difference than play. I know its still excerise but its like more focused and they walk and will go and hopefully you won't get all that night poo. Also if he isn't fond of the leash and walking make sure you take a great treat to coax him into walking. Good luck I hope this all works out for you.
