| Brought a puppy from Brazil - need help!!!! Hi everybody, I got a beautiful 3 month-old puppy as a gift and I just brought her to the US with me. I'm so worried that Nina is suffering with the weather difference (above 80s in Brazil, below 30s in NY tri state area). Can that be true or is she just stressed out with the new family? How can I pot train her if she won't go outside? Anyone, please!! I'll show you pictures of her shortly. She's truly a beautiful puppy. |

| Some........... Some people use the wee wee pads when the weather is so cold. My yorkies have never had a problem going outside to potty and we hit pretty cold here sometimes in Missouri also. Every dog is different. I know some yorkies you can litter train also. Depends on what kind of mess you want. I hope all goes well for you and your yorkie baby. Welcome to the United States!!! |

| HI! I too have a Yorkie from Brazil. Please post your pics. My baby Cashmere will be 15 wks this friday and is 1.5 lbs. She was hypoglycemic when I first got her (its been almost 3 wks) I would suggest Nutrical to help w/ the stress of the changing climates. Is she a smaller or larger Yorkie? Also, do you think there is a difference b/t imported pups and domestic? This is my first post as well, so Welcome to us both! P.S. I'll be posting pics of Cashmere as well!

| Welcome to both of you with Brazillian puppies!! I live in MD and we have had cold weather as well, snow, etc. I still take my little guy Hercules (almost 5 months) outside to go potty. If you are trying to train her to go potty outside, then I say stick with it. Like mentioned before, pee pads are always an option as well. Is the only problem you're having that she won't go to the bathroom?? She might be adjusting from the move too. It's all probably quite a bit for a young small pup to handle. Brandi & Hercules |

This is my first puppy and I must confess that I have zero experience, but I'm working hard to learn everything I can to make Nina a happy puppy. Nina and I arrived today from Brazil. She hasn't had the chance to be properly trained. Whenever she goes outside, she shivers a lot. This afternoon she made little progress when she walked on the snow outside my office (yes, we haven't been home yet!!). I feel that her urine is too concentrated because she doesn't want to drink enough water. Also, I tought she would be starving because she had been fasting for her flight, but she wasn't. I don't want to overreact, but I would like to learn the signs that indicate that my puppy my be sad or stressed out. But I understand that she had a lot in the last 3 days. How long do you think she will take to adapt?

Thank you so much for your adive. Her vet in Brazil warned me that Nina could have a hard time switching food. The past days she's been having Royal Canin for Yorkieshires - I'm not so sure she's crazy about it so I will try Nutrical to see if she likes it better. Nina is a bigger pet. She is 3 and 1/2 months and she weight 1.88 Kg. I'm not so sure which is better - a domestic pet or an imported one. For me, who has just graduated from college, it was financially better to buy her in Brazil. I've heard that imported puppies take longer to adapt. I'll keep you posted of her progress. How was it with Cashmere?

| Heather, I'm not so sure about how much mess I want. The problem is that I work everyday from 9 to 6 (like everybody?). Is it possible to train her only before and after work? Should I keep her in a cage while I'm out, at least in the beginning? I know I need to be consistent, even tough I feel bad. So far (it's been only 4 days with her), I haven't punished her for peeing in the wrong place only because she hasn't arrived in what will be her final home. After she arrives home, what is the right way of punishing and rewarding her? |

| Hi Avborges, Cashmere eats Royal Canin mini for puppies also . When I first got her, she acted very depressed. She had a hypoglycemic seizure the next day 10 mins after we left the vet. I was distraught. I began giving her nutrical, which encourged her to eat as well as acting as a supplement when she did not eat. It took about 3-5 days for her to come around. B/c she was so small, she goes inside on the paper. It's way too cold to take her outside right now. She prefers newspaper to potty pads (which I prefer) b/c the breeder used them. She's been very easy to train, as she was already starting on training when I got her. I use the spray that attracts them to go potty where you want . She was 1 lb 3 oz when I got her at 12 wks. The Royal Canin is very good, I suggest staying w/ it and giving a pea size of nutrical maybe 1-3 daily (YMMV) until she is acclimated (sp/) to her environment. She is the sweetest little thing though. I don't know exactly what 1.88 kg converts to, but even if she isn't a "tiny" the Nutrical helps w/ the adjustment. Question: How much does everyone feed their puppies? Again, Cashmere is 15 wks old, so I give her a 1/4 cup total a day of the RC, with no treats in between Love the site, and thanks so much!

| Gracie is 11 weeks, and she eats Royal Canin for puppies also. She has food available all day to her to eat when she's hungry, and 3 times a day I give her Nutrical to supplement her. I also give her some canned chicken in the mornings for extra protein and to stimulate her appetite. |

I crate train Hercules. In my opinion, if you are not going to be able to spend practically 24-7 with your puppy, then this is the way to go. The crate is not cruel or mean. Instead it becomes a place that your puppy can feel comfortable in. It's their den. Put a blanket or towel in there, and maybe even an old t-shirt of yours, since it has your scent. Put some toys in there too. Things that your baby likes. I put Hercules in the crate while I am at work and at night. I probably keep him in there longer than he should be during the day, but he's been doing really well. I never scold him for accidents. If he has an accident I just simply clean it up. Instead, when he goes to the bathroom where he's supposed to, I praise him a lot! That way he associates going to the bathroom outside with praises. Sometimes I give him a treat too. It will be hard at first, and it still is with me, but patience and determination will pay off. The best thing is that when you take her out of the crate, take her immediately to where she's supposed to go to the bathroom (like outside or to the pee pad). When she goes praise, praise, praise! Also take her to the place she's supposed to eliminate after she naps. Another good thing to do is keep the area she's allowed to be in small. Don't let her roam the entire house. Instead, section off a particular area for her, or get one of those play pen things. We section off the living room with Hercules and it has worked well. When you are at home and can't watch her carefully, she should also be in the crate. It will become a safe place for her. As for food, I use Eukanuba puppy for small breeds. I feed Hercules two times a day, 1/4 cup each time. So that's about 1/2 cup total. And he does get treats sometimes. He loves the Pup Peroni, I break it up into smaller pieces, and of course greenies. Once you develop a routine and create some stability, I'm sure she will feel safe and more secure. Just give it some time. Hope this helps some. Brandi & Hercules

| Wow...how cooll!! Mojo and I are also Brazilian!! Mojo came from the city of Natal (northeast of Brazil..close to the city i was bone in) May i ask you both where your puppies came from? and what is the breeder's name? Also, Mojo adapted just fine (but then again, i am in sunny Florida), the food was a little hard, he ate a brazilian brand that i couldn't buy here...so i first offered royal canin and he is eating very little for the first 1 or 2 weeks. Potty trained requires lots and lots of pacience....i never crated Mojo...it just feels so mean, he has horror from being trapped (maybe travelling at such young age did that to him) Anyways...good luck both of you and post pictures soon...Mojo wantes to see his "conterraneos"! |

| Brandi and Hercules, Thank you so much! I felt guilty about the crate, but I think that's what I will do. She weights 3.3 lbs. How much should she eat and how often? I have to say that your posting was an amazing help for me. I'm relieved by it! |

| Babbie, Nina and I are from Belo Horizonte. I love beautiful Natal - was there just last year. His breeder is a vet named Luis Moratto. Thank you for sharing your experience. You will see pictures of Nina pretty soon! |
