Bella Boo & Diggy Too! Donating GS Member | Going CrAzY!!! its Bella.... Ugggg not sure where to even start! Last monday she started having itching issues. It was between her shoulder blades on her back. Took her to vet he thought allergic reaction and said benedryl every 6 hours and hylte shampoo (think thats the name) well it then spread to her arm pits and sides...she dug so hard at these she wore blood blisters on her skin. Seasonal allergies are in the back of my mind at this point but she wasnt biting feet or licking (yet) so I bought into the reaction thing. Well Benedryl stopped working on her and back to itching. Now she is starting on her feet alittle and going for the butt area also. Back to the vet....now we are given 1mg of prednisone a day and benedryl every 6 hours. Worked for a day then Saturday night she went CRAZY itching BAD BAD BAD!!! I was up all night with her and felt HORRIBLE hair clumps were flying and she was running and pacing and biting and itching...licking....ugggggg So to a new vet we go, ours isnt open on sundays...This vet also says reaction type allergy and says ween her off prednisone and gave her Chlorpheniramine half a pill 2-3 times a day as needed. So far its working but Bella is SO SAD!!! she has a half of a prednisone left and Im afraid that thats whats helping her not itcha nd when she stops taking it we are back at square one. I was on my way to switching her to NV Raw. So we started on the kibble as I was planning on doing rotaion of kibble and raw program they have. This was a month or so ago. It's possible she is reacting to the food??? I know its been a month but could she have been fighting off reaction until this point and her natrual histamines arent powerful enough??? The vet seemt o think its a good possibility and said go back to whatever food she did best on. Well that would be Merrick chicken pot pie. BUT here is another weord thing....We had chicken last sunday which is went this started. I did give some to Bella. Then we had the same type of chicken Sat. (marinated in italian dressing and griled on kabobs) and she had a horrible night and itching. So what the heck is going on???? PLease feel free to ask me anything that may help me figure this out!!!! I feel like I am looking right past something and I am giving her something to cause this!!! I hate it! Oh as far as treats go I only give gerber fruit and veggie puffs and yo plus yogurt everyday and 2-3 time a week they get half a capsule of pet flora. No commercial treats AT ALL!! for chewers they get a flossy once a week for 2-3 days then i throw them away. I was VERY well before giving them to them the second time with diluted bleach water and dry well. We dont take any chances with bacteria! So please if you can figure this out or have similar situation let me know...Im going a wee bit crazy and trust me Im crazy enuff as it is!!!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I think it's the chicken w/ the dressing - and nothing else, I really do! Think of what is in that dressing - just look at that label, eek! I doubt it's the kibble or I think you would've seen a reaction within 3 weeks. Also, because you saw a SEVERE reaction immediately after feeding the grilled chicken, *boom*, I think it's the chicken. Could also be from the grilling, which can be irritating (combined w/ the dressing).

| Again, I gotta' say..... skin scraping... did the vet do a skin scraping to check for mites? If not, I'd get her in today and have it done.... costs next to nothing and takes only a few minutes... It certainly can't hurt to check. Will be watching for updates and I hope your baby gets to feeling better soon!

I marinate the chicken for like 3 hours....then grill but when i give it to Bella and Diggy i cut the outsides all off and only give them the meat from the inside so the Italian could be inside too right from marinating?? Well either way NO MORE CHICKEN! Should i take her off chicken based foods also? Both vets REALLLLLY pushed Hills for allergies and I keep saying no. Am i wrong???

| the marinade sounds like the problem - probably not the chicken itself. The shampoo should help. Are you also using a soothing creme rinse? I would definitely recommend the same brand as your HyLyt Shampoo - they have Relief Creme Rinse or find another brand with the oatmeal -- you can use that several times a week to calm the skin -- it will not dry them out I would avoid any introduction of human food, except in its purest form

| Have they had the NV raw yet? If so which protein source. Jamie is itchy with chicken (he was on Wellness kibble and still had itchies). We rotate the NV lamb, rabbit, and venison. He really likes all three and never has the itchies anymore. It might be worth a try to just switch them to the raw for a day or two and see how they do. Jamie switched cold turkey and we've never looked back.

| Paula I think Bella could have mites also. Chachi has had them before and he was just like you described Bella with the spreading and the hair loss. He was put on Prednisone first also because the vet thought it was allergies. I really there are so many dogs with allergies thats why the vets suspect that first

I Love My Babies Donating Member | If I were you, I would go back to basics. No marinated meat for her. Nothing with dressings. Feed kibbles and dog meat or do the doggie cooking. But nothing off of your plate until you get whatever this is settled down. Try the scraping that was mentioned above. I can imagine how frustrating this is for you. When your baby gets back to being healthy again.. then try one thing at a time. Until you figure out what set it off. Prayers to you and your little one.. I pray that you can find the problem and get it fixed. Hugs.

| I really don't know what in the world is going on with her but when I think food allergies, I think itchy ears and paws. That doesn't mean it is not that, but my first thought would be mites. That is the kind of itching it sounds like (crazy and uncontrollable) and the armpits would go along with that. So I'd either do a skin scraping (you might even need two if the first one is negative) or possibly just treat for mites anyway (without a positive scraping). If that doesn't work then I would probably think food. She doesn't have any kind of rash, does she? Couldn't have gotten into anything before this happened? The Italian dressing could've gotten into the middle of the chicken somehow but it is surprising that a little bit of something they had never had before would cause such a severe reaction (unless they have eaten those any of the ingredients before). As for washing the flossies in diluted bleach water, are you sure you want to do that? Unless you soak them for a long time the middles aren't really going to get cleaned well and that just seems so toxic to me. I just give Ellie raw vegetables. By the way, if it is mites and both vets never thought to test for it, I think I would be upset. I think mites are more active at night, so she could have incresed itching then. Also, I think warm/hot water stirs them up and starts the itching.

and Prairie Lamb Meal & Oatmeal Medley Yes she has had chicken without any issues. I get chicken from a butcher chop on the corner that is fresh and I never use anything else. Boneless skinless chicken Breasts. I have given her the marinated chicken on like 2 other occasions before this last week and nothing happened but I understand they dont necessarily break out with allergies the first or second exposure too. Glad I said no to Hills then. They are pushing hard!!!! Kinda disappointed me. 2 of the 3 said Hills and one of those 2 even said Iams. I said no no no. But then i thought crap maybe Hills isnt that bad...I know Iams is bad but I dont know much about Hills.
