Default ToothBrushing Issues

SO I attempted to brush my 5 month old's teeth with some organic peanut flavored..can you say DISASTER?! he'll eat the toothpaste off of my finger but as soon as i touches his tooth he freaks out flicks his head away and tries to run away and hides his head from me. I don't think he'll ever let me brush his teeth.. I'll have to pay petsmart or the vet.

There are mouth rinses. I use C.E.T. brand toothpaste and then a C.E.T. rinse. I also use little tiny tooth brushes that I got at my vet's. None of mine are particularly tickled to have their teeth brushed but none run from me. Don't know what the solution will be to that one. Hopefully someone will have a suggestion. Good luck.

Not that it solved the problem, but I practiced brushing Hot Rod's teeth before I actually did it with paste. Ever since we've had him, I comb him and then I say, "let me look at teffers" This lead to taking a brush and slowly getting him use to the sensation. Then I put just a little paste and so on. As a matter of fact I just brushed his teeth tonight. He didn't really like it, but at least he wasn't totally surprised at the ordeal. Good luck.

well I bathed teddy tonight it's been two weeks since his neutering(vets gave me the okay to bath him). So i waited until he was all dry and I played with him alittle and then he calmed do and He didn't mind licking the toothpaste off of my my finger but as soon as the brush touched his teeth he jerks his head away and tries to run away.. I can't even get a brushing motion in!
Petrodex Natural Dental Kit for Dogs - Health Care - PetSmart

thats what i got the toothbrush is doublesided and I tried the small side which seems perfect but maybe I'll try getting something else because I saw tartar on his teeth despite the fact I give him dental bones that he LOVES and also uses as toys.. I got the peanut flavored because his favorite treats are peanut butter flavored.

My baby fought me on the toothbrushing also. This is what worked for my yorkie....I gave him one of my old toothbrushes and he went crazy for it. He thinks it is a special chew toy. So for the first few nights before bedtime, I would give him the toothbrush....then slowly I started putting a teeny bit of PetzLife on the toothbrush and he would cautiously like at it and then eventually begin chewing away. Gradually I worked up to the correct amount of paste on the brush. He chews on it, holding it with his paws like a little otter and chews on both sides....he will chew and chew until I take it away. Every night he brushes his own teeth, better then he would ever allow me to do. I only let him have it while I watch him. It worked for me. You should give it a try....let me know if it works for you pup.

Petzlife is great, but I also use an enzyme-based toothpaste. A couple of tips I learned from fellow YTers. A cat toothbrush is almost the perfect size to use. I also started out using gauze wrapped around my finger and rubbing it all over his teeth. He seems to tolerate that much better.

It's very important though. I hear too many stories of yorkies with dental issues and problems with surgical complications and/or having to have most of their teeth removed and being very sick.

Gizmo has a problem with stains on his teeth that nothing can seem to remove. We think that it may have been caused by a medicine he either took as a puppy or maybe one his mother took during her pregnancy. His teeth and gums are healthy (according to the vet). They just don't look very nice. We have to be careful to keep up his teeth-cleaning because it's hard to tell if they are clean sometimes.

Good luck. I like the idea of allowing him to chew on or play with the toothbrush. I think that's a great idea too.

I don't know a solution really but thought maybe perhaps if you just let him or her see the toothbrush, let him or her chew on it while you're holding it so they get used to it being in their mouth, then maybe try. I'm lucky, Maggy May LOVESSSS having her teeth brushed. Soon as I say, "Maggy, wanna brushed your teeth?" She RUNNNS to my dresk where I keep the stuff at and just sits there and waits for me to get it all out then jumps up into my lap and lets me brush them.

When they are tiny like that a tooth brush is kinda scary. I started by putting some toothpaste (the doggy kind) on my finger and swishing it around their mouths for a couple of seconds. When they are used to that there is a tiny cat tooth brush that is pretty good for starters. Then I would go to the really small peridox brush....the cat brush is also a peridox product. I think other brands make them too. I also put my feet on my desk as to create a bed for them with my legs. I lay them on my legs(which is kinds comphy for them) face up. When they get used o the brush you can hold their mouth open gently with two fingers to get the job done in less than a minute.

Letting them see and touch the brush is good and also you can let them smell the toothpaste first.

It's a ritual but when we are done they get their favorite treat so they don't even think all that much about the brushing (which they are not all that crazy about). This treat they only get after brushing mostly and very occasionally other times.

Brushing is really good for them so I do it.

sammy does not enjoy it, but he knows every night, 7 days a week , before we go to bed , he gets them brushed. i use petzlife gel and cet toothpaste with a cat size toothbrush. they dont really like it, but you have to show who is boss , or otherwise you will be putting him under for teeth cleanings. which i do not want to do.

I started doing my 3 yories teeth about 8 weeks ago every night as Pixie had really bad gum disease and plaque build up. I had to have dental on her Tuesday and they removed 5 teeth and she is just 2 1/2. So I decided Ias going to do it every night. I start with dental wipes, then use a finger glove toothbrush and toothpaste and then use Petzlife. Pixie is a dream I can do anything to her mouth, Roxie is getting better every day but Cali fights me but I am determined to keep their teeth in as good as shape as possible.

I was just trying to upload some pics of Maggy May brushing her teeth with me but for some reason, they won't upload right now, I'll try again later. She really loves it though, she can be running through the house like a wild woman being a terror and all I have to say to calm her down is, "Maggy, wanna brush your teeth?" And RIGHT NOW she's settled and ready to get them done, lol. I guess I got lucky.

Try putting something yummy on it first, maybe that will help. Maybe don't even brush his teeth the first few times you do it, just let him lick the yummies off, then maybe he'll get to know it's something yummy and fun.

It's totally impossible to get into Scooter's mouth. Even the vet can't do it without sedating him. He would lick the toothpaste off my finger but that's as far as I can get. I'm to give him an anti-imflammatory drug that you put into the back of his mouth and it dissolves right away but he tries to bite my finger off. I have to dissolve it in his food.
