| Questions about heat cycle. Pita is going into her first heat cycle, she is very tired, her nipples are swollen as well as her privates, she has a tiny amount of blood occasionally but nothing too bad. How bad does the bleeding get? How long do you think the heat will last, I read 3 weeks but is that true in our little dogs? Pita weighs 4 pounds and is 9 months old, my vet wouldn't fix her until she was 10 months so we are going thro at least one heat, now I'm not sure I absolutely want to close the door on breeding her as she is so perfect. Anyway... How inconvenient do all of you find the heat cycles? What have you experienced as far as changes in your babies when they have them? |

| My Ahia bleed pretty much for about 3 or 4 weeks. Her flow got pretty heavy. I used the diapers on her. she went through a false pregnancy after immidately after. The biggest problem i had during that time was My Buckeye(male), would not leave her alone. I had to put a belly band on him and diapers on her. They bought drove me crazy! Ahia changed in a big way. she acted more "grown up". it calmed her down a lot. (AFTER)

| My experience has been that she will keep herself very clean. When our two female maltese were in heat a few months ago, I never saw any blood anywhere. I did not need to use a diaper on them. There is a big difference in their personality after their heat. They seem more calm and loving. Although during their heat, they were so lovesick over our neutered golden retriever, it was just SILLY! |

| I haven't seen any blood either although she is definitely in heat. I had Reva from QueenBk9 overnight me some diapers just in case. Thanks for your help. Jennifer |

| How do you know they are in heat?? I have an 8 month old and the only thing I've noticed is that she positions herself when I am giving her a rub so that I am rubbing her "area"....does this mean she is going into heat??? |

| Pita's nipples started to stick out which was not the way they were, and her privates got really swollen (still are) and she is always licking herself, I've seen no sign of her wanting to breed, no rubbing or posturing or anything, but this is her first heat, she's only 9 months old and we are only one week into it. |

| I noticed one of Brady's nipples is scabbed but they aren't swollen and she is totally positioning herself (HA!) - she's so cute and such a little baby, I can't believe she could be in heat!!! How long do they typically stay in heat for?? |

Donating YT 14K Club Member | The heat cycle last normally 21 days. 7 days to come in, 7 days full blown, and 7 days to go out. It can get messy if the bitch doesn't keep herself clean. That's why a lot of people go to the diapers. whelping...my girl has calmed down quite a lot. don't know if you have a hyper little girl.

| the bleeding lessons after about 15 - 16 days where is a very light pink to almost clear which is your idea breeding time usually. If this is her first heat sometime you'll get little to no blood some even miss the first heat because they can be so light. the panties help a lot if youre in fear of getting blood on your furniture with a little panty pad cut in half. hope this helps

| I posted about this on the general discussion, because I'm kinda worried, How swollen are her privates sposed to get?? Is there a point where I should worry? Could it be that she is licking herself too much? |

| the swelling and grooming is perfectly natural, nothing to worry about its just mother nature.

I read somewhere that you should wait until your Yorkie was 2 years old before breeding her. Thanks. Tracy | |

| Gosh, If you plan on breeding you need to do a lot of homework first.. and to answer your question you should wait until at LEAST the second heat cycle. First heat cycle should begin between 6 months and 1 year, There are four stages, which are: Proestrus: bleeding Estrus: will accept a male Metestrus and anestrus: ovarian activity, this is when false pregnancy can occur, Which seems to happen a lot in yorkies.

| Tracy its always best to wait for second heat but if a bitch comes in first heat beyond one year of age then some might consider breeding, depending on her weight and maturity. Hope this helps
