| Real Food? I have been talking to about a bunch of people who have had dogs way before me, and they all say Real food is better than dog food. I was thinking dog food has only been around since 1930's or so. Dogs lived on regular food much longer tna this commercial stuff. Chicken, veggies, etc. Im thinking if i should make this my dogs main diet. What do you guys think? |

| i home cook for Layla! it is important to have a balanced diet... a meat a veggie and a grain is your option.. i don't feed grains but you can.. but MORE important is to suppliement... that is key to home cooking.. you can get a great suppliement at any small, locally owned pet store.. Solid Gold makes a great suppliement and i know you can buy suppliements online that are made just for those who homecook. layla loves it and has never been healthier! |

| I would much rather feed homecooked than dog food. As Marci said though, you have to supplement.

| Homecooking is great!! But you have to supplement with calcium, especially...Eggshells are a good option or bone meal, if you prefer... Yes, it is true that real people is better than dog food. Supplementation is essential though Dog food is simply overprocessed real food and many times food that is not fit for human consumption...

| Yes, most dog food is crap. Dogs are carnivores and were meant to eat meat, bones and organs...but the pet food industry has everyone (including most vets) deceived into thinking our dogs need grains, fruits, veggies, carbs, etc. Here are some articles on Pet food: History of Pet Food http://www.sojos.com/historyofpetfood.html What's really in Pet Food http://www.api4animals.org/facts.php...more=1&cat=286 Food Pets Die For http://www.homevet.com/petcare/foodbook.html I feed a raw diet http://www.geocities.com/havens_home/feedraw.htm http://www.rawlearning.com/ http://rawfed.com/ Homecooking is the 2nd best option if you don't want to feed raw. As long as you do it correctly, it is much better for your dog than dog food.

| the sites look good but i got this off one of them In summary Feeding supplements and vitamins etc is not recommended. In some instances it causes its own set of health problems. |

| No, it won't cut her throat; you need to crush it into a powder...1/8 tsp of eggshells is recommended when homecooking per day for a 10 lb - 50 lb dog. I don't understand the question about supplementing? Why would that be like giving dog food? There's things that they need to stay healthy like vitamin b's which they can get from you adding nutritional yeast...vitamin E, trace minerals, etc. Just like humans, dogs need certain vitamins/minerals.

I feed raw and I give a fish oil/vitamin E. supplement If you plan to homecook, talk to someone on here that has a lot of experience with it or talk to a nutritionist.

I now feed Natures Variety Raw Frozen Medallions - I use the lamb, venison, and sometimes rabbit. Wylie gets beef occasionally as well. For teeth, they get bully sticks and Canine Caviar Fish Stix, and occ. Denta Stix. For skin/coat, Eicosaderm (fish oil + vitamin E).

| I home cook and still give hard food in addition to deitary supplements--glucosamine and flax seed oil. The home cooked in addition to a mixture of SD Nature's Blend, Nutro (which the get very little of now), Wellness and a new kind I just started this week that I am drawing a blank on. I am very pleased with the results. One piece of advice to keep in mind, if you are supplementing their diet w/ calcium, be sure that are also getting ample amounts of Vit D, otherwise it can actually be harmful for them. |
