Senior Yorkie Talker | How Much Water? How much water is good enough to give to your dog? I find that when I leave the water out all day and keep topping it up my little guy keeps drinking and having to go to the bathroom over and over and over. I would like to cut back on the water to reduce his frequence (especially before bed time). How frequently can I give him water? Is twice a day with meals good enough? 3 times a day (once inbetween meals)? Cut off an hour before bed? Or do I have to leave out water for him 24 hours and put up with the having to let him out every 15 mins?

| Usually 1 ounce per pound of body weight daily will meet their needs. So if your dog is 8 pounds and there are 8 ounces in a cup then they should drink about 1 cup a day. This is if they are eating hard food. If they are eating moist food they should drink lots less. I would leave water out 24/7 until your dog sees a vet. It is probably just a fascination with drinking but could be something as serious as diabetes insipidus and limiting water could do serious damage. I would talk to your vet...

| I've heard of people taking the water away an hour before bed, but other than that I don't think you should really limit him. |

| I just noticed he's still only a puppy. The rule of thumb is they can hold it for one hour for however many months old they are so it should get better as he gets older. |

| I dont limit water, but with the new puppy I take the bowl away before bedtime so at 9pm that is his last watering. Bandit has water 24 7 but he drinks only a dribble and he is completely house trained. Bijour the newbie drinks a lot of water but somehow he is holding urine for 6 to 10 hours at a time, that is not good cuz he is only 5.5 months and when he goes, he goes like the ocean |
