| Clipping nails - 10 wk old Are the nails of a 10 wk old any different to an adult or older pup? Are they are softer. His nails are so long, they keep catching on my clothes, and I am afraid of him catching them on his bed and them coming off. I cant take him to the groomers until he gets all his jabs. He is going to the vets in 2 weeks to get jabs, so maybe the vet could do it? The other thing is that there is so much hair on his feet (and the pads of his feet) that I can hardly find his nails. I dont really want to clip them myself, but another 2 weeks is a long time!

| Our vet wouldn't clip Roxy's nails when she was that small but when she started going outside her nails wore down from all the playing and walking she was doing.

| I don't think you should try and clip them yourself. You might want to call your Vet and ask if you can bring him in just to clip his nails for you. In SD our Vets office had a walk in side they only did nail clips and shots and you didn't need to call for appointments. Now that we are here in NC, I have no idea what we are going to do because I don't know any of the Vets out here. But I'm working on that, for now we are using Aunt Brenda's Vet when needed. I would call and see, because two weeks is a long time, and if his nails are anything like Princess's he's going to need them clipped. Her's grow super fast.

| I dremmel my dogs nails on the low setting. Sitting on the couch I hold them so they are sitting on my lap with their backs leaning on my chest and dremmel the nails that way. If you wet the feet a bit this will lay the hair back so you dont get anything tangled in the dremmel. While I am training them I wait until they are pretty tired, usually after a long walk, and have my husband feed them something yummy while I am working and they forget all about what I am doing. If you decide to use a dremmel tool or something similar make sure you do short passes over the nail and regularly alternate to prevent the nail from overheating due to the grinding. I usually start with one paw, do a quick pass over all the nails and then start back to the beginning and do another pass. Dremmeling 2x a week keeps their nails from growing long enough to click on the hardwood floor. Best of luck! Last edited by Bravo916; 05-13-2009 at 09:53 AM. |

| If your dog's nails are that long, they need to be trimmed now. I start trimming my puppies' nails as soon as they need it, some dogs as young as two weeks old. Dogs need to learn at an early age that trimming nails is a part of regular grooming. I truly can't imagine having to take my dog to a groomer or the vet to has his nails trimmed. Start now and make it a fun experience for him and he'll learn to be good while you're doing it. If you're not comfortable trimming them yourself, use Bravo916's tips about using a dremel. That's a great idea.
