If your dog's nails are that long, they need to be trimmed now. I start trimming my puppies' nails as soon as they need it, some dogs as young as two weeks old. Dogs need to learn at an early age that trimming nails is a part of regular grooming. I truly can't imagine having to take my dog to a groomer or the vet to has his nails trimmed. Start now and make it a fun experience for him and he'll learn to be good while you're doing it. If you're not comfortable trimming them yourself, use Bravo916's tips about using a dremel. That's a great idea.
