| cotton coat vs. silky coat A friend of mine is wanting a yorkie with a her second yorkie with the shorter cotton coat (like mine). I want a puppy with a silky coat for my second yorkie. How early can we tell what kind of coat the yorkie will have? Dawn |

Missing Yoshi Everyday! Donating Member | when you bring them home you could usually tell...imo...although coat do change but mine seem to have kept the same... another way that others determine is in pictures....if they have silky hair than their eyes will glow green where as if they are cottony coat it will glow amber/orange

| Thank you for responding. We bred her silky-coat yorkie to my cotton-coat yorkie. Her coat is not hard at all for me to maintain. Her hair seems to stay the same length (not short, but not the floor length either). I do brush her pretty often, but mostly because she really likes it. She does hate bows in her hair, so I do take her to the groomer and have her hair clipped above her eyes. I am disabled and don't want to hurt her, if she moves, so the groomer does this and clips her nails. My Gracie is due in a couple of weeks so I was just curious. |

Oh I didn't realize you were a breeder, we have a breeder's forum, and I know this question has been addressed there before, but without many details. I did want to mention that some coats are a mixture of silky/cotton, and generally cotton coats are the fastest growing, and reach floor length easily, while silky coats are slower growing. A true cotton coat can mat so easily even with daily brushing, so yours may be a mix.
