Hey everyone, I gotta say this forum has been quite helpful for me and my new bestfriend, Armani. Ok here is my problem.

I am currently potty training my 4 month old yorkie to make outside. I keep him in his crate which is sized only big enough for him to lay in and turn around in. I take him out 4 or sometimes 5 times a day, using positive reinforcement with a treat everytime he makes outside. I pick him up and have him crawl directly in his crate after going outside. sometimes he makes#2, but mostly its #1. He feeds on a normal routine, and is placed into his crate until 30 mins after he eats. Then he is taken directly outside for his walk. He loves his walkss and more and more is realizing that this is HIS time. his last walk is around 11 pm.

I live in a 2 story house, and his crate is downstairs in the livingroom next to our toy chihuahua's crate. I have kept his crate 2 nights in a row in my room and both nights he made #2 and 1. Only crying after he had made. Now, every night for the past 8 days he makes both 1 and 2 while we sleep. It's pretty discouraging to think A, he doessn't mind being near his own mess, 2, the little guys coat smells something aweful everyday which i then clean. I know if i smelled like poo i probably would just stop caring after awhile too. and I am still cleaning up his crate outside with him everyday in the morning. PLEASE HELP!!

My bubuu is now 11months, and i gotta tell you it took me time to potty train my lil gurl... I tried those pee pads you can buy didn't work for her but works great with my pugs. We did the crate training too, same with what happened to yours. We tried having time frames to go outside to do her thing but didn't work. You know what worked for her? NEWSPAPER! Works great for my bubuu. You just need alot tho. I've asked alot of yorkie owners and they say it was really a challenge to potty train them. Good luck on yours, she'll be fine.

what the person said before is so tru Hampton hates the pee pads, he will only go on the newspaper i have no clue why. Also i just recently started doing crate training at 6months for him as well. The crate was too much for him when he was younger, he got separation anxiety but now hes fine. He sleeps all through out the night. And in the morning right after am done getting dressed for work we go outside and he goes potty he just started going outside it took 8months to get that far and we are still training, so stick with it your dog will get used to it. Also i went to petsmarts potty training class, it didnt help me but that can be an option they have free classes here and there during the month. good luck

Sasha is peeing and pooping in her crate as well, and I do not know what to do either!! I feel your pain tho!

Ferdinand did the same thing. I finally stopped crating him after him making in his crate almost every night for a few months. It just doesn't work for some puppies. If you're really set on crate training, you may need to set your alarm for once or twice in the middle of the night to wake up and take him out.

Is he in his crate all the time??? As in, he's only out to eat and go on walks, and go potty outside?

I hate to do this because he is so adorable,but yes. He is always next to our other dog and he is in the busiest room of the house.

He needs some play time outside of the crate. If he's crated all the time, that's too much IMO. If I was locked in a crate for 23 hours per day, I would certainly not be happy. When he goes outside he should get playtime as a reward. If you are able to supervise hime at any given time, he shouldn't have to be locked in his crate.

He gets his playtime...when he is outside he gets 30 to 40 mins. and at night we let him sit on the couch with us.

I am thinking bringing your puppy out 4 or 5 times a day is just not enough for him to eliminate. I have a puppy that is a little over 3 months old, and I put him out 3 times just in his first hour of being up after the night. I see mine tends to pee a LOT the first time bringing him out, then 15-20 min later he goes #2, and then I bring him out about 15-20 min. later and he goes quite a bit of pee AGAIN. Then if he isn't napping, I bring him out about every1/2 hour to 1 hour. But he takes (2) 2.5 hour naps between 8:30 and 4, but once he eats supper at 5 ish, he will take a quick snooze right after that and then I put him outside about ONCE every 45 minutes from 6 pm until bedtime at 9/9:30, and then my guy sleeps THE WHOLE NIGHT in his crate (from 9ish until 7am) and this has been CONSISTENT almost from the beginning, but VERY consistent for the last 2-3 wks. Mine will get ONE to TWO walks during the day and a lot of run-around play time with the kids in the evening.

Another thought maybe pulling up his food and water by 7 pm. I am also thinking the LATE-NIGHT walk may be making his bowels move?? Maybe if the walk happened at 7 or so, he would go #2 at around 9 or so instead of in his crate??

AM I right in hearing that he is either OUTSIDE or in his crate?? Is there any middle ground? Mine ONLY uses the crate for the 2 big naps and BEDTIME, otherwise he is playing with the kids (in the TV room, but they know to watch him closesly) or in his ex-pen.........which is a much bigger space than his crate!!!

Sounds like you've got an excellent routine going!! It is true - puppies need to go potty 10-12 times per day (so says my trainer). And yes, walks do stimulate a bowel movement.

Just a side note... Yorkies are one of the most difficult breeds to train. Some take a year to potty train. But consistency is the key.

if your puppy is constantly in his crate then he will experiance some behaveral problems. jsut picture yourself being cooped up in a small room big enough for your bed , you can lay down and turn around. thats how your dog feels. dogs lurn by experiance lack or experiance will set training back. concluding i nthe fact he pees and poops in his crate, my ex's Shih Tzu would do business in his crate.
its not much of a life for a dog to be cooped up in a small crate 90% of the day.

our dogs have full run of the house 24/7 excpet my yorkie sleeps in my room on my bad at nights and i keep my door shut.

this is the feedback i like. from all over the board.THank you so much for all of your suggestions..i am more than likely going to place a playpen in that room and line with paper until he is fully trained.

does his weight seem odd at 15 weeks and 3.5lbs already?

well, when i was crate training soma, he did the same thing, but i always kept in mind that his bladder was extremely small, no matter how much he wants to hold it he just couldn't. it wasnt his fault when he had a accident during the night. eventually he finally was able to hold it through the night so all i can say is stick with it, and get a new bed so that the smell of urine is gone from the crate and thoughly clean it too.

We had the same problem in the crate and when Sophie was 3 1/2 months we let her sleep on the bed with us at night and she has only had one accident during the night in those six weeks. We take her out for the last time at night between 11-12 and are up between 6-7. We tried leaving her in a small bathroom with a potty pad during the day and she used the pad for her business but from what we had heard, they won't learn to hold it if they get the idea it is ok because you gave them someplace to go, so we started crating her during the day about 3 weeks ago. She just this week has stopped going #2 in the crate. She is still wetting, but we feel like there is some progress. It is slow, you just have to be patient.
