Using A Litter Box For Yorkins - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I've read numerous references to using a litter box rather than pee pads. If you use a litter box for your yorkie, what litter do you recommend? Of course we want something safe for our little ones, especially if there are pups near it - they have to "taste-test" everything!!! I haven't researched various litters, but want to try this method, especially for pregnant girls or post-whelp when it's hard for them to get outside to go - and a pee pad becomes 'messy'.... OR when traveling, I think it would be easier for them to determine the difference - - peepad vs. floormat OR litterbox vs floormat!!! At least I hope SO!!! = )

I bought a doggy litter box at PetSmart and put potty pads in it. That's what Sugar uses. I love it because he can't miss the potty pad now and if he goes on the edge and it seeps underneath, it's easy to just hose out. I tried to train my daughter's dog Spike to use it as well but he just wouldn't so he goes outside (hopefully

).

I litter box trained Cricket when she was a puppy,, using Second Nature litter and litter box,, but, she NEVER would stop eating the litter,, i sprayed it with Bitter Apple,, Bitter Orange,, vinegar,, nothing worked,, she'd use the litter box,, but would still eat and play with the litter,, so i gave up,,but not on the litter box,, i just went to disposable pads in the litter box,, that worked very well for us til we added a second Yorkie (Daisy) who is our Teapot and she'd use it,, but mostly would end up backing up over the side or on the side,, so i finally gave up on the litter box and just put the pads down,, then after the third Yorkie added (Trixie) we found Little Bits washable potty pads and that is what we now use with our 4 Yorkie girls (Ayla is #4),,, works great for us! i have a dozen washable pads now,, 8 here where we are most of the time and 3 back home for the weekends we get to be there and use on in the truck on the road... sorry ,, but we never could break Cricket from eating the litter,, tried everything recommended,, though i did try grass blocks too,, and liked that idea,, just put blocks of grass (like you put down in your yard) in the litter box,, but,, it would die too quickly and be over used with now 4

Thank you for the replies!! For some reason, I just didn't think of putting a peepad IN a litter box. That sounds real dumb, but hey, as I get older, I get "blonder" (really gray but I don't confess to having any!!!) I just know how much my boys, especially, love to kick after going and was trying to picture that IN A BOX in my house. =) I had persian cats that would daintly SIT ON the corner of the box and go over the side, then cover up 'nothing'.. and think WOW, I'm a good girl!!!! it's all gone!!!! = )

If you want to use a litter box with washable pads in it. I can custom make them to fit your litter box.

You would think it's obvious to put pads in the litter box but I had to have it pointed out to me too. I do tend to think I'm a blond trapped in a brunettes body though.

To the original poster, we too, use the pads in the litter box. I tried too, to use the litter when AprilLove was a puppy, but yeah, she enjoyed the pellets for play more than for potty

So i switched to the pads and it works great, and they can tell a difference, because they have to go into the pan to do their business.

We have been using the Purina Second Nature Doggy litterbox, medium sized one . They sell them at petsmart, not sure where else. Here is a link for you to look at them

The one pictured on the front page of the website is the small, I wouldn't recommend it unless your Yorkie is under 3 lbs or less. The medium has a good amount of room for them to circle in and find that "perfect" spot, lol

Forgot to add, that the medium measures on the inside at 15" x 20" length by width

Thank you MaryKay for the dimensions and the recommended size. I hadn't gotten that far yet, but i have kids that range from 3 lbs to 7lbs.... so a little 'room' will be required, I'm sure. 'specially my girl, Tosh. Has to fix the blankie just perfect before she lays down, has to pick up each kibble walk three steps and eat it, I swear she has OCD!!! = )

I trained my little boy to use a puppy pad in a medium sized litter pan. I tried the litter at first and he wanted to eat it too. The other nice thing is that if you use a 23 x 24 sized pad and a medium sized litter pan, you can cut the pad in half and get two uses out of one pad!! He did really well with it, he is a kicker to but he just hops out of the pan and then does his kicking and waits for his praise. This is also nice for traveling or taking him to someone else's home since there is no litter mess. I took him to Alabama at about 4 months and just took his pan and put it in the floor board and when we stopped put him in it and he went. Also, I used the training spray at the beginning to help motivate him to use the pan/pad combo. But we don't use it anymore.

I don't remember the name, but you can find it by the housebreaking supplies and potty pads at PetSmart or PetCo. You can accomplish the same thing by wiping up an accident and blotting it on a new pad. Much cheaper.

I would love to try that. My problem is Kayla likes anything paper. (actually she likes anything she can tear up). I know what would happen. She would tee tee in it and then pull the pad out and tear it up all over the house. I'm beginning to think she is a losing cause. I know one thing, I'm not replacing my carpet until she is completely house broke.
