Default Giardia Again!!!

I recently learned that once a pup has giardia, it might never truly go away (even with a clean stool sample) and they are very susceptible to getting it again.

Well, Sissy woke up at 4:00am and began vomiting. Although she had stopped vomiting by around 10:30, she wanted to do nothing but sleep. Since my vet is open till Saturday afternoon, I decided to take her in rather than have to use an ER vet later if she got worse.

They suggested a stool sample, so since we were already there I might as well. She is loaded with Giardia and she also has a bacterial overload. The vet said that the giardia is probably in her upper GI tract since she is vomiting, rather than the explosive bloody diarrhea she had last summer when she had it.

So, Angel will be treated as well and all the beds, blankets and toys are in the wash right now with bleach added. So, now to do the floors and all surrounding areas. I just hope we nip this right away!! Good thing I trusted my mommy instincts!!

The vet also said giardia is running rampant right now (at least in Michigan) as we have been so wet and didn't get as cold this year for any length of time so nothing got a chance to die out. Please have your babies checked if you suspect this. They can get really sick really fast!!

Oh, poor Sissy I'm so sorry she is ill again, this giardia is a royal pain in the butt! I have been dealing with it since we got Kalani and I know how frustrating it can be to try to get rid of. My vet's asst. said Utah is also having a surge of it and that it's taking 3 rounds of meds to clear up -ugh

Hope your little one feels better real soon!!! She's lucky to have you for her mommy

Hopefully we can clear this up with a single round of meds, but time will tell. The vet prescribed the Metronizdole (sp?) in liquid form, given with a syringe, that she had last June.

I'm sure our yard is full if it right now as we have lots of water in low lying spots from the snow melting and the rain we had last week. We also live in area with tons of seagulls and Canadian geese and they poop everywhere!! So between them and the other birds who are carriers, they can basically step on spores just about everywhere we go, including just walking on a leash on our sidewalks.

I'm keeping baby wipes just inside the back door now and everytime they go out to potty, their little feet and bums will get wiped. Other than re-training Sissy to use wee-wee pads, I'm at a loss as to what else I can do to possibly prevent her from getting this again. She is just so pityful looking, you can tell she doesn't feel well.

Aww the poor baby. I hear ya i don't know how you can prevent it in your area and also i don't know how to decontaminate a yard after is already there. this is my problem to because there were 4 days before we knew Daisy had it so my yard is probably contaminated to. That is the same medicine they put Daisy on 2X's a day for 14 days. Becareful of the dosage that is also the medicine that almost killed Daisy because of the wrong dosage. I hope she gets feelong better soon. we send lots of hugs and kisses,

Oh poor Baby !!! that's such a nasty illness and I hope the baby doesn't get it...but you're so smart to get her right in....It may be that you'll have to watch for this all the time as stress etc can cause it to flare up but as long as you know to watch for it you do just what you're doing ....I hope she feels better really soon and hugs to you.....what a good mom !!
