| Help!!! I Am Very Worried About Bruce!!! Here is the situation: We are stuck in the middle of an artic freezy and due to very icy roads are completely unable to drive to the emergency vet, and I have no idea if weather is going to be a problem tommorow... Bruce is having diaheria, and it seems bad! This morning on our morning walk he had a very watery stool, but there was no mucus nothing like that but it sort of just shot out (sorry that sounds gross). Now he has had two more HUGE EXTREMELY WATERY and mucussy looking poops, one appeared to have blood in it (but just a small bit of reddish brown). He seems to be eating normally, and drinking water, his energy level also seems okay. However, he jumps slightly when after these watery mucussy stools and keeps scooting at his but. His anal glands were also just expressed so I do not think it is that. I have examined the poop and see no worms or those rice grainy things they get near their buts with tape worms. I am beside myself because I do not want him to be hurt or become gravely ill. What could this be? How can I help him before we get to the vet? Please Help

| That sounds like parvo to me which can be very deadly. If you furbabes been vaccinated for it and is over a year, his chances of having it are slim. I think the best thing would be to keep him as hydrated as possible since he has diaheria amd watch for any signs of him being lathargic.I'll keep him in my thoughts and prayers, I hope he feels better

My furkids Donating Member | O my Gosh! I hope he's going to be alright!! Did he maybe eat something he shouldn't have? Have you changed his food lately? Did he get a shot? I would definately get in touch with you vet tomorrow...Maybe you could cook up a little white rice and boiled chicken.. Where do you live that you are in an artic freeze! just wondering...I live in central Mass and the weather man just said we may get snow by the end of the week

| Bruce is up to date on all his shots, I am very strict about the dogs he is exposed to (1) No strange dogs, (2) No puppies that are not vaccinated, (3) No dogs that I do not know the owners of personally and know the dogs have been vacinated. So I feel like the chances of parvo are slim. I am keeping my eyes appealed for lethargy howerver, thank you for the tip. I am so upset because we are trapped here and I want to get him attention immediately!!!

| It could be parvo, but it also sounds like giardia symptoms. One thing in your favor is that he is drinking and eating which they do not do with parvo (unless it is a very light case). We always recommend canned pumpkin for constipation, but it is just as good for diarrhea - it is a digestive system normalizer. Cooked white rice is also good at firming stools. The main risk with diarrhea is dehydration so push fluids by giving watered down chicken broth. Pedialyte, an infant electrolyte solution, is very good because it restores electrolyte balance when one has diarrhea and will keep him hydrated until you can get to a vet. Feed fluids by syringe every hour around the clock if the situation worsens. If he starts vomiting, then you probably aren't going to be able to keep more in then is coming out and he will need to be put on an IV or be given something to prevent the vomiting. Keep a close eye on him, but if you can keep him hydrated you are probably safe. I hope everything goes well tonight and the sun will come out tomorrow so you can take him in. Please keep us updated. P.S. Dogs can and do get parvo even after vaccination. |

| If he has parvo and I cannot get him to the vet he will die wont he? I am debating trying to carry him the 8 miles to the emergency vet. I am so scared, I thought I did all the right things to keep him from getting Parvo.

| I would suggest calling the vet first thing in the morning. Even if you can make the drive in, your vet should be able to offer some advice. I'm not a vet, but it sounds more like giardia or some other type of parasite. Sending hugs |

| He most likely will not die even if it is parvo, he will just need to be supported with fluids. Those that are vaccinated usually get a lighter case. The freezing weather makes me think that any virus he could have been exposed to would be killed so not likely parvo. He is still drinking and eating which is a very, very good sign. A dog with parvo will not even eat the most tempting food. No vomiting at this point? A lot of people describe any loose watery stool as diarrhea, but the frequency is actually what is more important. As long as you can put more fluid in then what is coming out you are probably okay. I know you love your dog, but putting yourself (and dog) at risk by walking 8 miles in extreme temperatures doesn't seem like the best thing to do at this point. |

| Prayers going up for you and little Bruce Listen to LacysMom, she's the BEST!!!!!!! Just keep those fluids going in, and write down whenever he pees or has a bowel movement so you can tell the vet in the morning. I always forget how many times something has happened when my baby is sick and dontchknow the vet ALWAYS wants to know Hang in there and stay warm!

| I will say a prayer for Bruce! Keep us updated on how he's doing. I would say that it could be a number of other things besides parvo. Take Lacy's advice and I hope your weather improves so you can get him to a vet! Hugs to you and Bruce!

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Oh, Alison, this so sucks. I just stumbled upon your post too late to offer any advice. Hopefully, you've resolved the problem by now. I know you're doing what's best for Bruce. I hope that doesn't involve trying to walk 8 miles in the snow, though! That could be dangerous for both of you. Any chance of calling a cab? It really could be anything at this stage, so don't panic. Get him to the vet or call a vet as soon as possible. And please keep us posted.

| Poor Bruce! The only time we had this experience, Toto was diagnosed with an "intestinal inflammation" and with lots & lots of fluids & medication, she was back to normal in a few days. We will be praying for little Bruce and you! Please update and let us know how the little fella is doing. Hugs & kisses from Toto!
