| Pet Insurance For My Yorkie? Help! Hello Everybody, I am new to this forum but I found very useful information here so I was hoping I can get some advice. I have a 1 year old yorkie. He's been hospitalized twice already for what it seems to be Pancreatitis (even the doctors are not very sure at this point). I spent over $1.000 on November and $1.700 yesterday./ He didn't want to eat so he was 4 days hospitalized with IV fluids. Since Pancreatitis could become a chronic disease, we are considering insurance for Morix because we cannot afford to pay so much every a couple of months. ANYBODY WITH PET INSURANCE? DO YOU KNOW A GOOD INSURANCE PLAN? Any information regarding this matter would be greatly appreciated....Thanks. |

| I have the insurance through Akc only when it was the free trial. I can't figure it out though so I have never renewed it after the 60 day trail. I would be interested to know more about this too. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I have VPI insurance and so far i have submitted 5,000.00 in claims as CAli has a liver disease and bouts of hypoglycemia and they denied the first claim of 1500.00 for preexisting becasue she was treated for hypoglycemia a few days before my policy was effective and the rest for genetic related. I just sent them teh 2700.00 claim for her possoble intestinal blockage, spaying and liver biopsies and I expect they will deny them as well. I think most policies do not cover preexisting conditions and genetics so you may want to check very carefully before getrting one.

| Hi Patti, Thanks for replying.... Then, I don't understand. Most yorkies have liver problems, pancreatitis, hypoglucemia....so if they don't cover for that, what do they cover for? If most of our dogs have these problems, how can they be so sure if they are chronic or genetic diseases ? |

| I am re-posting my post from a previous thread about pet insurance In another forum I go to people said that they were not happy with their pet insurance. Many companies do not covered such things as your dog being hit by a car. They also do not pay for any illnesses that they claim are genetic/hereditary and a lot of the time if your dog or cat comes down with something the insurance company refuses to pay saying it is a pre-existing condition. Also the have caps on the amount it will pay on any illness or injury per year. So if your animals medications for something cost $500 a year the insurance may only cover $100. The thing about pet insurance is that most health problems are considered genetic/hereditary or congenital - in other words, not covered by the insurance. So if those are your biggest concerns, you might as well put the premium amount into an emergency savings account for the dog (separate from your household emergency savings account). If you're biggest concerns are accidents like sprains and strains, breaks, etc., then the insurance might be worth considering; it seems most accidents of that nature happen in a puppy's first year, so really the ideal would be to get the insurance *and* also contribute to an emergency savings account, so that in a year or two you'll have enough savings to be able to drop the insurance and still cover what they would have paid from the savings. |

That's the advantage with getting insurance for your yorkies while they're healthy and BEFORE they become sick. Most health insurances will exclude pre-existing conditions, it's the same with human insurance (except human insurance have exceptions to the rule as allowed by law). if you don't have insurance now and found out you had cancer today and tried to buy insurance tomorrow, the insurance company will either deny your application or exclude the cancer treatment because it's a pre-existing condition. Insurance companies are still a business and in the money of making money. Accepting an applicant who will no doubt submit more in claims than pay in premiums due to a known condition is bad business. Insurance companies can also assign different premiums to you depending on known conditions of your dog, like age and breed. Breeds with known chronic problems or genetic dispositions can cost more to insure than a breed with minimal problems. Older dogs premiums can cost more than younger dogs because they are more prone to problems as they age. check out the following pet insurance companies: www.petinsurance.com, www.petcareinsurance.com, www.petshealthplan.com . read the terms of their policy carefully making note of what's excluded, the annual and lifetime max, and the deductibles. but tell you the truth, if your objective is to reduce the cost of healthcare due to the chronic Pancreatitis condition in your yorkie, i doubt any insurance company will accept your pet without excluding treatment associated with that condition. | |

| I got pet insurance years ago for my first yorkie. What a waste of money. I got it for her the second day I had her at 11 weeks old. She got sick about 4 months old and was diagnosed with a liver shunt. Thousands od dollars were spent at the vet and NONE of my money was returned. Since it was hereditary, she was not covered. So basically, unless you drop, kick , step on your baby..... other medical problems will not be covered! So I don't even bother. Pet insurance is not worth paying. OMO |

| i wouldn't say pet insurance is completely useless. you just have to read your policy carefully and understand exactly what's covered and what's not. having pet insurance can help you with the cost of things like treatment due ot snake bites, broken legs, injestion of foreign objects, poisoning due to injestion of household chemicals, a cold, urinary tract infection, ear infection, ulcer, etc. all of those are possibilities in the lifetime of a pet and cannot be predicted. but as many will attest, insurance will not take care of every and anything. like everything else with our pets, it's important to research and be educated on what you're purchasing before you purchase it. pet insurance is no exception. |
