| How long does it take after ginving oxitocin for the afterbirth to come out? Hello. My 3 year old girl gave birth to two babies on tuesday morning. I monitored her all day and night and still no afterbirth. So this wednesday afternoon i took her to a vet and he gave her oxitocin. He said that i shoud watch her, and i am, but nothing except for some bloody discharge is coming out. He said it might come out tomorrow...is this for real? I thought that it should come immediatly after the birth...but i dont know. DId anyone have this happen to them? And if yes, what happened? Im very worried and i need some reassurance. She is doing great, shes eating, drinking, even wags her tail now when i take her outside. She's her usual self ;barking at people and birds ; and snuggling next to her human mommy when teh babies fall asleep. SO her behavior is very good. But i feel very unsure that something might happen to her because of the afterbirth matter. Please...anyone have any comments let me know. Thanks in advance. |

| I'm not knowledgeable about birthing, but my SIL's dog had puppies and the dog ate the afterbirth. Is it possible that could have happened? Just asking because I have no clue!!

| Unless you never took your eyes off her since the birth, they are no doubt gone..she probably passed them while you were busy, asleep etc..moms eat the afterbirths and there is no signs. BUT...incase they are not out, take her temp AM/PM and if it goes over up, call the vet...watch the discharge..it will get nasty and smell of there is infection..good luck |

| Sometimes when oxytocin is used to expell placentas they do not come out whole. They will come out gradually in the discharge. Keep in close contact with your vet.

| Oxy works pretty fast to contract the uterus. But, like as has been said, you might not see the placentas if mom can eat them..Take her temp now for a baseline and then every 12 hours of more often. If it goes about 102.5 there might be infection. Let your vet know ad have mom checked. She will continue post-partum discharge so keep her clean. And if she starts to have an unpleasant odor, take her to the vet immediately. He might want to put her on amoxycillen just to be safe-some docs do.. |

| thank you all for your advice. honestly, i did walk away several times after she gve birth. after all..i do need to pee and take a shower lol. she went to teh vet today and her temp was perfect. she is also walking and running already, and she barks like usual, n eats and drinks alot. she seems fine to me and i now think that maybe she did eat it when i wasnt looking. she was breathing kind of fast a while ago while sleeping but i thiink thats becuase she didnt sleep at all yesterday so shes tired. im gonna see the vet on friday again to check up on her. BUT i really do think now that she ate it....ewww...cant believe it though. There were some yucky brownish stains on the towels that she gave birth on...almost like water stains that were pretty big. Was that it? |
