| Scare of my life! So, this past Friday I experienced the worst feeling in the WORLD! My little baby Leo got to a medium-sized piece of grilled chicken that fell on the floor before I could get to it. He saw me coming to get it and I guess he got too greedy and tried to eat it all before I could grab it from him and he started to choke. Ugh, I can't even begin to explain the FEAR that came over me. He was crying and making weird noises like choking and gagging noises. I totally freaked out and tried to put my finger in his mouth to see if there was anything in his throat and accidentally scratched his throat with my nail while doing so (these bad boys have been cut down to the root now). He bled a little bit and kept on choking until I was able to run to my husband (while hysterically crying at this point, lol) and he saved him! He was able to smooth his throat down while holding him up to his stomach and I guess he ended up swallowing it. We were going to take him to an emergency pet vet but they said if he was breathing and acting normal to take him to his regular vet the next day. Next day we got up super early and took baby Leo to the vet and he got a full check and he was FINE! I was SO scared, I honestly felt like I was losing my baby and there was NOTHING I could do to save him. I've never felt that level of fear before; it was HORRIBLE. I'm just glad he's okay now and he's on 24/7 watch whenever we're eating now lol! P.S. I've also since educated myself on what to do if this were to ever happen again so as to be better prepared for an emergency if I'm ever presented with it again.

| OMG that is scary, thank goodness your DH was there. These little buggers are fast, reason my Cody is banned from the kitchen while I prepare his or my food, and when I have dinner. So happy baby Leo is ok.

| I know. I seriously couldn't shake it off for like 3 days. Even now when I think about it I start to get anxiety again lol. He's so small that I seriously don't trust him alone. I even took away all his little chews out of fear that he might choke on a big piece he bites off lol. Me too!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Omg - I SO get this! My Marcel almost died from choking years ago - and to this day, I can barely even think about it...he was literally dying in my hands. Luckily, the Heimlich worked eventually and he started breathing again...but it was really a miracle that he made it. We have the CPR/Heimlich thread here in the ER section as a sticky - and in the Library as well - if you ever want to print it. Also, me and hubby took a doggie First Aid/CPR course at the Red Cross. SO glad your baby is okay! Good job!!!

| So glad your baby is alright. I can imagine how panicked you were, I was getting nervous just reading your post. I'm printing off CPR and Heimlich instructions now. These little fur babies are so fast. Glad he is OK. |

| Thanks for sharing. YT readers learn from stories like yours. We have to ALWAYS be on alert with tiny dog! My tiny Jilly had a choking incident on the knot end of a chewie shaped like a bone with tied ends at each end. She chewed it down to the end and tried to swallow one of the ends which lodged in her throat, allowing virtually no breath past it and she went bonkers, going in wild circles tearing at her muzzle with her paws, little gasps coming from her throat. She literally stopped breathing and went limp as I held her body and head upright to try to ease her breathing and drove her to the vet with the other hand. I had to pull over to give her breaths and drive on, still breathing for her! By the time we got there, she was breathing much better and no longer choking. The vet said likely the adrenaline in her system from the shock and night air, the wild car ride and the rushing of saliva to the area likely helped the swelling of the throat around the knot subside and soften the rawhide and allowed it to slide on down the trachea as we were in the car. Needless to say, no more chewies I wasn't holding for her and still she got blessed few! SO glad your little one was saved. A choking dog is the scare of a lifetime!

| It's definitely scary, Joey had a choking issue when he was 10 weeks old and we had to go to the ER vet because he was shaking and coughing. They told me the worse thing to do when a dog is choking is reach into their throats because you can push it farther in. Lots of places now have dog cpr classes. Glad he is ok.

To this day, I'll never know how I got the front and car doors unlocked, opened, us into the car, started it, backed out and still held her upright, breathing for her and drove the 7 minutes to the vet without crashing while driving with one hand and holding her upright, her closed muzzle to my lips with the other, breathing for her and praying. I remember saying Jesus would help her over and over to her as calmly as I could between breaths as that's all I could think to do right then as inside I was panicked as much as I'd ever been in life. One of the worst nights of my life - or hers! But thankfully, given the way the body was designed to work, her saliva enzymes slightly broke-down and slickened the rawhide knot and her adrenaline working on the pharyngeal swelling around it, her body did allow her to finally swallow it just before we drove into the vet parking lot and she was breathing on her own again. I changed vets after that episode.
