| Please help, - Rusty's penis was stuck out and swollen. Rusty is 2yrs old and I love him very much. I'm really worried that something was wrong with him. I'm not sure if I'm just being silly or if it is something to truly worry over. I go to school at night and last night was a school night for me. It's finals this week and so I have been working non stop studying, so I grabbed me some chinese for a late lunch before classes. With my nerves all out of wack I couldn't eat much, so I tossed it in the trash. I went to class and got home about 11pm last night. I notice that Rusty had gotten into the trash and ate the remaining chinese food that I had thrown out. I really didn't think much of it, except the fact that I had a mess to clean up. My daughter can into the kitchen and said, "I think somethings wrong with Rusty, his thing is out and it's really red and swollen" I looked over and she was holding him up so I could see. Now I know he will get excited and it will come out, but my daughter was right it was extremely red (looked like it could have been bleeding but it wasn't it was just that red - usually when he gets excited its more of a pinkish color) and it was swollen so much that I thought a first my daughter was playing a very sick disturbing joke (which I should have know better than that, she's a good kid she would do that and she was just as concerned as I was). It was painful for him. He didn't want to be held and he surely didn't want any attention down there (I think he was embarrassed). And it was stuck out, he couldn't get it to go back in. I waited a little while then I called my husband very concerned for Rusty. My husband thought that he is just going through puberty and just got real excited. I explained to him that it was not like that. When he got home around 1:45 am it was still out and swollen. My husband, then became very concerned. I don't know how long it was like this because I left for class around 6pm. He was fine before I left. I said that if it was still out and swollen in the morning then I would take him to the vet (I honestly thought that it would be fine in the morning). This morning I wake up and sure enough it's still out and swollen. I take my kids to school and I said that I would call the vet when I got back (the vet's office is not open that early). But before I left to take the kids to school it finally went back in. The area around it was streched for a little while but then it went back to normal. However, he is still a little sore down there and still does not want anyone holding him. I mentioned the chinese food because he has never ate chinese food before (we try to keep him only on his dog food). And I was wondering if maybe he could have had a reaction to the chinese food. Please help, yes I am serious, I'm worried about him. I guess it could be puberty but my motherly instints tell me that is not the case here. Thanks for your help in advance. Jen |

| I would definitely call the vet. We had one of our rescue's have to have surgury because it was always hanging out. This is very painful to a dog. Your little guy was not embarassed just sore. I don't know if MSG would have an effect on a dog or not. Good Luck and let us know what happens.

| Take him to the vet soon. That can be painful, contribute to infection and embarrass your kids..I know of a male that continued to have that problem even after he was neutered at 4 years old. The vet told mom to keep a spray bottle with boiled water in it. Spray his penis with the water and gently pull the foreskin back over the shaft. Urinary tracts can be painful for dogs and it is important to try to prevent it.. |

| I think there was a thread on here before about this.. I think a warm bath was suggested. I'll do a search and advise..

| My Zeus does this very often - usually after he has jumped his pollow if you know what i mean....It does take a while for it to go back so we just leave him be. His was also very red. He is 11 months old. But it never take more than say 15 minutes for it to go back to normal. |

| I'm not an expert on this topic or anything. I do have two Yorkie boys, but this has never happened to them or any other of my male dogs in the past. I was reading you post and this thought came to my mind: Is your furbaby allergic to anything in that Chinese food? If he is, that might have caused the swelling. I have never heard of this happening, it was just a thought. If I were you, I would take him to the vet or at least call your vet and basically tell him the whole story that you just told us! |

| This is a condition that can happen to a person - I worked in an ER for a few years, and we had several men come in with this problem. Also Viagra and similar drugs (vasodilators) can cause this condition. You said your dog got in the trash - what else might he have gotten into? Could you have thrown away any medications that might have been in the garbage? I wouldn't have a clue as far as helping your little dog. And, I do know that this is a painful condition - so it looks like a trip to the vet is in order. Keep in touch and let us know what the vet does. Carol Jean |
