Yorkie Talker | Terrified to take her to daycare now. That's right, I took my pecious Amy to a day care while I was out of town and low and behold when I come back she's hacking and coughing and just making these god awful sneezing/honking noises. So terrified me rushes her to the vet and my baby has kennel cough. Not "terrible" but for her not even being 2 yet and she has never been sick I died inside. I felt like her getting sick was entirely my fault so now I'm afraid to take her back if I ever have to leave town again...which I have a dear friend graduating from Penn State next month which I wanted to see him walk but I dont know what to do. Amy is kicking me off the couch now, so i guess I need to end my post. <3

| Isn't there anybody who can take care of her while you are gone. I thought that day cares were supposed to check to see if all the dogs had all of their shots. I would expect this from a shelter not a day care. When we got Zach he had a bad kennel cough, it took about 3 weeks for it to go away but he came from a pet shop and the vet says it's very common for dogs that come from pet shops and shelters to have kennel cough. If I lived closer to you I would take care of Amy for free. |

| I thought most doggie daycares required every dog to have the kennel cough vaccine? Granted, the vaccine isn't a 100% guarantee of protection, but if she absolutely has to go to a daycare sometimes, you may want to talk to your vet about the vaccine. Is there a different daycare she can go to? If they don't require the vaccine, they should be super vidgulent about making sure none of the dogs going there have any symptoms. And, don't worry, she'll be fine after antibiotics

Yorkie Talker | She has all her vaccinations and the other dogs did as well I made sure to ask before I dropped her off, I was just in shock to realize that she got it. Afterward when I took her to the vet he told me that even though dogs are vaccinated they are still susceptible to getting the illness. Shes doing much better now shes been on her antibiotics for about 5 days now, a little lethargic but still her little "monster" self. Do you both think it would just be better to find someone to babysit her either at my home or theirs rather then take her to daycare?

so sorry to hear that she got sick, i wouldnt trust taking her back either. However, dont they make sure every animal is up to date with vaccines, and require bordetella? if you get that vaccine, u usually wanna get it done 2 weeks before boarding your pet......hope she feels better soon!

Yorkie Talker | I thought the same thing, but what I am guessing is that someone's dog either had the illness or was a carrier of it. I could never place blame or be angry at the place I took her, but I will definitely be more careful and pay a friend to just stay at my home with her.

| I guess I am some kind of nut when it comes to our babies but I never even put mine on the floor at the vets. lol!!! Talk about paranoid. But, I know how you would feel. I would be afraid of doggie parks and other places but like so many have said, it looks like they would have to produce proof of shots and vaccines. Don't know. But, thats why it has been along time since we have took a vacation. I don't even trust friends to take care of them. lol!!! See, what I said??? A paranoid mommy. Sorry your baby got sick though, it is so hard seeing them feel bad. |

Yorkie Talker | Haha, I'm paranoid about certain things with her but I dont know if im THAT paranoid lol. Its really cute though that you care so much about your babies though. I just want Amy to be less fearful of going to the vet or even the store. I like having her sniff around and attempt to interact with her surroundings, but now im more fearful that if another dog comes near she she will get sick again. *sigh* its a never ending situation =(

YT 1000 Club Member | Well, IF anything, it was possibly the wrong selection on the place. When taking my two to be Groomed, which is a Day Care Center as well, I thought I was filling out forms, for some TOP Security clearance for them. I swear it was three pages for each ! One often forgets, or doesn't consider the level of contact, and some occasionally do not give their little ones shots to cover those occasional instances. Even a trip to the Pet Store, Doggy Park, or other areas of assembly, can create contacts we don't think would be infectious. Though many don't inoculate for "all" possibilities, I do, for just those vary reasons. The appropriate protection for Kennel Cough is called Bordetella. I think it also can be given as an injection, or via a "squirt" of liquid in their noses.

Yorkie Talker | Ok, I do know that she had the bortedella liquid "squirt" before she went to the daycare. And I suppose that is something I didnt take into account, I knew she was going to have organzied play with the other small dogs there, but I probably should have just asked for them to be more one on one with her. I feel like such a terrible mom to her for letting that happen. And yes I do remember when I took her to the groomer after being gone for a while the amount of paperwork I had to deal with was incredible. I do get email updates from my vet telling me which shots she is due for about 3 weeks in advance so I can call in for an appointment with her.

| Play care TERROR I had little Rocky at play care last week while I traveled to LA. He was there Monday morning to Thursday morning. When I picked him up he seemed off to me. On the way home he got worse. Could not stand, was shaking like crazy and twitching. Straight to the animal hospital, and he was in a hypoglycemic state. Low really low blood sugar. Rocky is 5 years old. We got him stable, and surmised that he was left to play hard with dogs larger than he and was not supervised to ensure he was eating enough. In addition, the added stress to his body from playing and running so hard since a 6 lb Yorkie has to work twice as hard to cover the same ground that a 15lb small dog just wore him out completely. I believe that my day care is full of loving caring responsible people but they are not able to properly supervise each dog and did not understand the stress levels a very small dog could be exposed to. Take-away from this. I will make sure I have detailed instructions that he is to be feed, while supervised 3 times a day and that play time is limited to twice a day with rest inbetween, OR I will find a caring home sitter that can watch the dogs in my house. His new baby sister Lilly arrives today from the mainland.

| I've recently spoken to my vet about the risks of doggie parks, daycare, public places etc. What he told me was that while there is a risk, there is ALSO a big risk to not socializing your dog to other dogs and people. He then proceeded to tell me about one of his patients, a Boston Terrier, who had an owner that was afraid to let him be around others and as a result was very socialized. He was constantly trying to bite my vet and the staff while he was there out of fear. Well, this dog now had also recently bit his own owner, who went to the emergency room for the injury. As a result, the hospital followed protocol and contacted animal control. They wanted to put the dog in a mandatory 10-day quarantine and the owner was fighting to let him keep the dog in quarantine in his own house instead of taking him away. What a horrible mess to be in. I would go crazy if someone tried to take Snickers from me! So, I guess it's a fine line between protecting your dog from things in the environment outside the home and protecting your dog from becoming fearful and aggressive.

| Also, my vet also told me he generally doesn't like to give the bordetella vaccine because it is only good for 6-months and is ineffective against so many strains. He only gives it if absolutely needed for boarding, etc.

This, and to rocky as well, I appreciate your feedback and to know someone else has gone through this terrifying experience with me. Thank you to the both of you! Amy appreciates it as well and hopes that your babies are back to their happy selves.

| The lady I pay to walk Veruca while I'm at work also stays in our condo to dogsit when we have to go out of town and cannot take her. She loves Veruca so much, she doesn't even charge me to dogsit. :-) You need a really reliable person who will care for your baby as much as you do! |
