| Bully Sticks & Bloody Diarrhea I just got back from the vet with Sioux (almost 2)...she had bloody diarrhea (bright red) and I didn't want to risk it. She is our nervous girl, and was shaking when we got to the vet. She had a temp of 103.5 and when they did a fecal the vet saw blood. They are doing a culture and put Sioux and Dakota on a dewormer, Flagyl, and Sioux is on an antibiotic due to the blood and fever. The vet mentioned checking for hookworm, but she thinks it was caused by Sioux eating a few bully sticks at my brother's house. The vet said she has seen more than a few cases of bloody diarrhea from bully sticks. Anyone have any experience? She is not dehydrated, and they gave all meds before we left. She is now pretty chillaxed, but before we went she was more energetic. It could be a side effect of the meds, or she was just stressed. Any help is appreciated... |

| Oh - the vet also said the fever could be caused by stress, but she couldn't be sure. |

| I don't have good luck with bully sticks. I just don't give them to my pups anymore. They do like Himalayan Chews and I have not had any problems with them. I am certainly in the minority, though.

| Ruger loves bully sticks, but my girlfriend won't give them to her dog. I think the experts have mixed reviews on them, so if in doubt I would just stop giving them. It's not they are a nutritious meal. My breeder recommended cow's ears, and Ruger loves those, too. I've got pieces of cow ear all over the house. Hope everything turns out okay. |

| I gave my three bully sticks a few years ago and they all got severe diarrhea too. They were sick for a few days. Never again. Can't imagine what the heck they put in those things to keep them from rotting on the shelves, but it can't be good for them. I'm sorry your baby got so sick. Hope all is better by now. Hugs to your baby.

| Anything your dog chews on, that gets soggy, dirty and then it lays around and then they chew on again is a breeding ground for bacteria and bacteria can cause problems. I don't give mine anything edible or chewable like rawhide or bully sticks...anything mine get can be washed and sanatized. I hope Souix feels better soon. |

| bully sticks I give Belle bully sticks that I buy from YT seller. Never had any problem with them or her being sick. She has 2-3 of them around all the time. I do not and would not buy any from a store as who knows where they have been or what was used to preserve them. The ones I get Belle have been smoked and sterilized. |

| Just wanted to give you an update - it has been a looooong week, $1400 dollars, 2 ICU stays (Wed night) and last night, one diagnosis of HGE, and one diagnosis of Acute Pancreatitis. They said the HGE (hemmorigenic gastroenteritis) manifested first, and turned into pancreatitis. She was discharged after 36 hours NPO, and now on baby food for a few days. It is now 3am and I just fed her a teaspoon again. She needs to have small, frequent meals to limit the amount of stomach acid. Just wanted to give you an update. BTW - the vets had nothing good to say about bully sticks at all. They have seen so many prolems. Thanks for your kind words... |

| I can see from the previous posts, that bully sticks must, indeed, cause problems w/some pups...However, I've been giving them to mine, w/o any problems...Apples been on them for 2 yrs. and Buzz for well over a year...Cha Cha, who only weighs 4 lbs. and eats more bully sticks than the other two, has never had an issues, either.....Btw, they have them at will, hiding them all over the house, and getting to them, when they want to... |

I would be very careful with them. There have been too many negative reports. It only takes one time and you don't know when that one time may occur. You might get lucky and it not happen; but I would be asking myself if the risk was worth it.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | It is very important to know where your bully sticks come from and how they are processed. I bought some at a pet store one time and all of them were up all night throwing up and the next day had diarrhea. I havent had a problem now with the ones I buy now from my supplier. |
