| Bad bloodwork results =( Today we took Layla in to the vet to get her teeth pulled. They took her blood and then asked us to sit in the waiting room with Layla while they ran all of her bloodwork, then they would come get us to put her under and pull her teeth. The doctor called us back into the room and told us that he had bad news, turns out Laylas BUN was elevated to 112! I guess the highest it should be to be in the normal range is 30. He also said that her white blood cell count was high. He told us hes going to send it off to the lab for a second opinion and started us on antibiotics. We are so scared we dont know what to do! He said she could have kidney disease, he also said it could be a whole bunch of reasons why her BUN was elevated, he dosnt know! We are so worried about our baby. Does anyone have any idea of what it could be thats causing the elevation?

| I'm sorry, I know you must be very worried. I'm sure the vet will get the answers you are looking for. What food do you feed Layla? I have read that elevated BUN levels can sometimes be connected to dog food high in protein, but there could be a number of reasons. High white count is indicative of infection of some sort. Did they say how long before they would get results? I will keep your baby in my thoughts and prayers!! Please keep us posted!!

| I looke at her age and she is only 1 month older than Pixie. I am wondering...Does she drink a lot? I had a golden that had kidney disease and she drank constantly. I also read that a high protein diet will cause elevated bun lvls. I would not get yourself all worked up the vet should of never said what it could be bc that is only speculations. I hope someone who knows more about this stuff will post soon. I am praying that it is nothing serious!! I would be a wreck as well, my Dad always says to me Half the things we worry about never happen and the other half have a solution.

| Elevated BUN usually is indicitive of renal issues; but it can be due to other issues. It also could be elevated due to an infection, which does sound very possible since she does have an elevated WBC. I think you need to do your best not to try to figure it out .. it will only serve to worry you more. I like what Spiritwings said about her father's take on worrying....so very true! I hope your little Layla is going to be just fine!

My demi is not a big water drinker unless it is totally fresh has to be changed 3-4 times a day for her alone and everytime i put a fresh one down she runs over and drinks a bunch of water - i give spring bottled water now as did distilled before and many say distilled does not taste good and they will not drink enough if it does not taste good - i did distilled to avoid tear staining but the switch over to spring no difference Last edited by dwerten; 04-14-2010 at 08:23 AM.

| A steady diet of chicken is certainly a LOT of protein in my estimation.

i use to get on dh as he would slowly start increasing demi chicken so now after she vomitted those two projectile vomits i removed the chicken just soaked kibble and thank goodness the princess is eating it and i do not have to fight with DH anymore everytime he feeds her lollll i was concerned since her bun was elevated and we were adding the organic chicken. So far no more projectile vomit either which is good. Thinking chicken may have been bad or just a tummy ache ;(
