| I think Bella might have LP Bella has a doctors apt. on Sat. morning. I have notice the last couple days that her back right leg is popping sometimes when I got to pick her up. Seems to go right back in place, she doesn't limp around or even act like it is bothering her. She is a jumping fool and no matter how hard I try she likes to act like Tigger! She literally bounces up and down when she see's ya or someone new, which worries me. I always stop her and tell her down, but have to end up picking her up to make her stop. She won't use doggy steps to get up on couch, etc. So any suggestions, any help would be greatly appreciated. I'll let ya know what I find out on Sat. |

| My stepson Yorkie had to have surgery for that. and she is a jumper too. She is all better now. She hasn't had any more problems with her legs. It's hard to keep her still for the 2 week after the surgery. She came though it just fine. And her knees did the same thing. i don't know what you can do to stop the jumping other than what you are doing. Izzy wouls jump on anyone that came in the room. she still doesn't it. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I use ramps for my girls. Cali has Grade 4 that we are watching. She doesn't have a limp or seem in any pain so with her health issues we are just keeping an eye on it. Hope Bella is ok.

| I'm thinking my little Pixie may possibly have this...i'm not overly worried right now because since i've had her (18 months) it has only happened about 3 or 4 times.. I had noticed on those occasions that one of her front legs seemed to pop out and she would be limping..this would last a minute or so then she would be fine again...I have also noticed that sometimes when I pick her up her front legs will crack. she is not a jumper and cannot jump on/off furniture because she is too little. Obviously this is something I will be keeping a close eye on...but until it is happening more often I will leave her be.

| oh Denise, I am so sorry to hear about Bella's condition . . I hope you are wrong . .Annika was diagnosed a year ago too and I was in denial .so I had to get a second opinion . .and got confirmation that she does have it . . luckily hers is so mild both thinks she won't ever need surgery, unless she is very "active" . . .and since she isn't that is good news to me . .I actually don't ever see her limp . . .keep us posted okay . . I will be praying for you both. |

| This is getting to be way too common in our little ones. One of mine has grade 3 LP but it doesn't seem to be a problem now. I hope Bella will be all right. I was by your house on Monday!! My son and I drove to Jill's to get a dog for someone. I had no idea you lived that close to her... if I had known before hand, I might of swung by said "hi!" |

| Hi. My Tia was just at the vet for the same reason. Like your Bella, Tia was running, jumping etc. with no issues but then out of the blue she started to refuse to go on the couch, down the stairs, and then the icing was coming home from work and she just would not or could not walk. No pain, no crying, just could not walk. All of this happened out of the blue and all at once within a week of each symptom. The vet diagnosed her with LP. Like your Bella you could feel her knee pop. I should also say that the next day after not being able to walk, she was fine, but I still brought her right into the vet. What I was told was to keep an eye on her for about two weeks and if it persisted then she'd need surgery. Knock on wood she has had limited issues. Every once in a while she will sit and want to be carried up the stairs, but no pain and it does not last. I'm still keeping my finger's crossed that she will continue with minimal problems. Let us know how you make out. Elaine |

| LP is common in Yorkies. Grades 1-3 do not neccesarily need surgery, the determining factor is pain or limping, if that occurs the surgery is recommended. A dog could live 18 years with grade 3 and never limp or cry out. It depends mostly on weight and displacement of weight, and also the size of the groove. The patella slips out of the groove if it is too shallow (thus a luxating patella), so the heavier the dog, the greater chance of it slipping out. Glucosamine supplements are recommended, as well as *attempting* to keep the dog from jumping from high places and using stairs or ramps (as suggested above) in places where the dog previously jumped. However, exercise such as walking can be helpful in strengthening the leg and keeping the dog at an ideal weight. A grade 4 almost always need surgery, except in special circumstances. Grade 4 indicates that the patella is almost always outside of the groove and often has ceased to "pop" back in at any time. Most of the time it cannot be manipulated back into the groove at all until a surgical procedure is done. This poses the greatest health risks because it can cause further damage to the knee (tears or ruptures, bone scraping against bone, etc.) and can also create arthritis in later years if left untreated. To hear the knees "pop" and seeing no indication of pain or limping is actually better. In this case the dog will most likely not need the surgery if the condition does not worsen. It can be treated instead with preventative care. Vets generally do not like to open up a knee with a grade under 3, and 3 is iffy depending on the situation and pain level for the dog. I hope that your Bella does not need to have her condition treated surgically. Start her on a good supplement and be careful not to let her jump from high places now. That can lead to a full and healthy adult life with potentially no future issues. |

| Poor little Bella! From the sounds of it, she's got LP, but hopefully it won't be over a 2 or 3. As you know, Libby had it and I give her Flexicose which I think has helped. I did notice in the past few days her limping outside and running on 3 legs, but it was like 40 below chill factor, and the frigid cold seems to trigger it. My vet told me to keep her skinny also, so she doesn't have extra weight bearing on the knees. Libby is a jumper too and there's no stopping her! As long as she shows no signs of limping or being in pain, I think she'll be alright. Maddie, Libby and I send lots of kisses!

| Avie has LP.. (she is grade 2.. one leg is a little worse and is borderline 3) she does NOT show ANY signs of PAIN, AT ALL thougH! you can feel it pop in and out sometimes though.. we give her a glucosomine supplement! (we have tried a couple..) and COSEQUIN is what we have been using for a while now.. it is BY FAR the BEST one we have found!! (of course, you can not reverse this.. but you definitely can MAINTAIN it and help stop it from getting worse!) i would NOT recommend surgery, until your baby is ACTUALLY SHOWING signs of PAIN!! (ALSO.. we DO have stairs for the couch and the bed! ) here is a link to the supplement we use: (COSEQUIN) Cosequin Reqular Strength (they also have a 'bonelet', also made by cosequin: COSEQUIN Bonelets Hip and Joint Supplement for Dogs - 75 Chewable Tablets) AND here are a couple links about LP: Medial Luxating Patella - VeterinaryPartner.com - a VIN company!
