Default The BIG Question

I apologize if this inforamtion is covered elsewhere I have actually searched the threads! If you can send me posts I would be more than willing to do the research !

Bleu is going to be neutered next week if all goes as planned! He will also be coming out of his cast YIPPEE!!

Here are my questions I hope I cover everything: I like details please be detailed with me!!!

1. What will his pain be?
2. Will I need to doctor him?
3. Will he have a scar?
4. Will I have to replace a bandage?
5. Will he bleed ?
6. What is his recovery?
7. How many days in hospital?
8. How long is procedure?
9. What will he be like after the surgery?
10. What complications do I look for?
11. What can he do and not do?
12. Will his diet need to be changed before surgery or after (fasting)
13. WILL HE HATE ME?

I would have had his neutering done when he had his major surgery but we did not know if he would even be alive so I did not risk him being under anesthesia anymore than what he had to be....

I dread this .. Please shed some light on this situation for me! Dont sugar coat anything though...

Hugs
I just love you all to pieces!

Here are my questions I hope I cover everything: I like details please be detailed with me!!!

1. What will his pain be? Somewhat...spaying is worse than neutering...ask for pain meds if you want them.
2. Will I need to doctor him? Just make sure he can't get to his stitches...it really depends on the dog
3. Will he have a scar? Yes but it might disappear within a couple months.
4. Will I have to replace a bandage? Spay/neuter patients don't get banaged.
5. Will he bleed ? Maybe a few drops...nothing major.
6. What is his recovery? no jumping for about 10 days...keep him as quiet as possible.
7. How many days in hospital? Should be able to come home same day..some keep them overnight...don't let them keep him overnight if nobody is their watching him. Ellie came home same day and I stayed up all night with her.
8. How long is procedure? 15-30 minutes usually.
9. What will he be like after the surgery? groggy for awhile and then back to himself...pain meds may make him sleepy.
10. What complications do I look for? The vet will tell you. Make sure his incision looks as healthy as an incision can. Make sure his gums are pink and he is eating, drinking, peeing and pooping like normal after about the first 24-48 hours.
11. What can he do and not do? No jumping or excessive exercise.
12. Will his diet need to be changed before surgery or after (fasting) He will need to fast from food for about 12 hours before the procedure.
13. WILL HE HATE ME? No, but if he is tired and cuddly, he will want you to cuddle him.

They will probably send him home in an e-collar but you can use a baby onesie instead as long as he isn't biting his stitches through it.

I would have had his neutering done when he had his major surgery but we did not know if he would even be alive so I did not risk him being under anesthesia anymore than what he had to be....

Thank you Ellie for your reply... I hope to have it done this week while he is still in cast it will keep him from getting to stitches ..

Do you think that is a good idea? I have got a call into the doc now!

If Texas A&M has given the clear, I would do it with the cast on.
If you are using your regular vet, do they use isoflurane or sevoflurane to maintain anesthesia? Do preop bloodwork? Do surgery on a heated surface?

I asked for extra IV and extra everything for the spaying..maybe that helps...dunno..I only gave her her pain med once or twice ..that's it..

Vicki
Bleu should do fine. I had Beamer and Sunnie both done at the same time. Poor babies. They came home with pain meds the same day but I have to say they were both hurting that same night. It was so hard to pick them up. I mean where do you put your hands. Especially Beamer because he had one undecended testical so he had to be cut in the tummy as well. So I couldn't pick him up with my hands around his tummy and trying to scoop him up with one hand on the front of his chest and one under his behind was painful too. But both were just about back to thier old selves in about a day. They still were sore for a few days, but they at least would walk around. The first night they both just layed where we put them and didn't try to move.

Just got off the phone with his actual surgeon since I trust her so much and she says NO NEUTER for 2 months He will almost be 9 months old! is that ok ?

She wants him totally out of the cast and us to do a month followup and then it will take a month to get him in at the latest !

I wanted to go ahead and get it done but she says "WAIT"

If this is Texas A&M you are talking about, then please wait. They know what's best. Nine months is definately not too late.

Some people refuse to spay/neuter til about a year old if that makes you feel any better.
