| ![]() When Max got neutered, he was a little uncomfortable the first evening and he hated the collar they put on him. I finally just took it off and he never did try to lick or go after his sutures. There is no scar that I can see (it's all covered with hair). He was up and running around almost like normal the next day! I couldn't believe it...I was all ready to go into my ![]() ![]() He had an antibiotic that I had to give him, but other than that, it was pretty non-traumatic, hallelujah!

| ![]() 1. What will his pain be? He will be asleep for part of the day and groggy for the rest. he may even be a little groggy the day after. Most males are back to normal the next day though. It's a pretty non-invasive surgery so he'll be a little sore down there but he should be acting like his normal self. 2. Will I need to doctor him? You'll need to make sure he doesn't lick/chew at his stitches. He'll need to rest and not be too active for a couple days, but other than that he should be fine. 3. Will he have a scar? They will make a small incision just in front of the scrotum at the base of where his penis starts. They don't cut the scrotum because it is very sensitive. He will have a few stitches there and that's where the scar will be. I can't see Rylie's scar at all. I can barely see Lacy's spay scar either. His scrotum with be hangy at first but will shrink and become pretty flat 4. Will I have to replace a bandage? I've never seen any bandages on a neuter. Just a few stitches closing the small incision 5. Will he bleed ? He should NOT be bleeding when they release him. There isn't much blood involved at all with a neuter. They clamp and tie off the testicular artery so that it never bleeds. There is a little blood from the tiny arteries in the skin where they make the incision, but once they stitch him up, they'll wipe off any traces of blood. If he starts bleeding afterward..that's not a good thing. (but he shouldn't) 6. What is his recovery? He will be groggy the day of and may be nauseous. Sometimes they throw up some bile when they wake up because their tummy is queasy. He'll probably be his normal self the next day...definitely by the second day. 7. How many days in hospital? I'm not sure if A&M makes them stay overnight or not. A lot of vets let them go home the same day..some make them stay overnight and release in the morning. 8. How long is procedure? It's pretty quick...once he's asleep and ready, it only takes 15-20 minutes 9. What will he be like after the surgery? groggy the day of and maybe the next day...might be a little nauseous as he wakes up 10. What complications do I look for? Swelling of the scrotum or around the incision, redness, sign of infection, bleeding. 11. What can he do and not do? You need to make him be still and rest for two or three days just to make sure he doesn't hurt himself. Also don't let him chew/lick his incision so he doesn't pull stitches out or get it infected. A lot of people use an e-collar (cone) or a onesie to stop this. I used a onsie for Lacy. Other than that he'll be his normal active self 12. Will his diet need to be changed before surgery or after (fasting) He will need to be fasted the night of and morning of the surgery (no food or water). 13. WILL HE HATE ME? No..he won't know any difference..I promise. Dogs don't miss their testicles (although a lot of people think they will ![]()

| ![]() Ben and Barney are both neutered...Neither have a scar...They each had 1 stitch....no blood...They came home that night...I requested pain meds for them...Was told they prob wouldn't need it...But I did not want to take any chances...They did not need it....They slept all evening and most of the next morning...After that, you would have never known they had surgery....The stitch dissolved...Did not have to go back for removal...That was nice... The only down side to it all was that they could not be bathed for 10 days...Did not bother them at all...Drove me nuts... Even knowing all these things...I was a nervous wreck....But I am sooo very glad I had it done... Joyce

| ![]() So glad you are putting neutering on the "back burner". He has been through too much to even worry about this surgery. Before I adopted Charlie in '07, he wasn't neutered until he was 9. Not sure why, but they are never too old. Warmly, Deborah
