| Pet Insurance Can anyone offer any advice on pet insurance? My boyfriend really wants me to sign up our dog because he thinks it will help save lots of money on her preventative care. After looking into it, I'm not so sure it would save any money. The monthly fees are around $35-$40 and then you only get a percentage back from the company for vet visits. I think insurance may be a good idea for emergencies, although I'm not sure whether just saving the $500 a month in a savings account might be a better idea. |

| My vet offers a puppy/kitten plan that takes care of all shots, fecals, and unlimited vet visits for the first year of life. It does not cover spay/neuter or meds. When I priced out the pet insurance, I found that for preventative care my vet offers a better deal, especially for the first year. I did purchase it for those "just in case" things. Fortunately I did because Gracie has LP. I just submitted my first claim. I will see how it goes. If the percentages paid don't equate to the premiums paid then I doubt I will renew.

| I have that VPI pet insurance and I got the superior plan but I am going to cancel because I just submitted all of Teddi's bills from the last 3 weeks and they denied everything because they don't cover liver shunts but I don't understand why they didn't cover some of it because, yes in the end she does have a liver shunt, but that was not why I took her to the vet in the first place...we didn't know what was wrong with her. I think they should at least cover the emergency vet and the days in the hospital. I could see them not covering the shunt scan or the shunt operation but the beginning bills should be paid. I would suggest just putting money in a doggie account...at least then you will have the money sitting there. Even if you only put in the same amount that you would pay for insurance at least the money will be there when you need it.

| I am not so sure that pet insurance is really useful for preventative stuff like shots, spay/neuter, etc. You would be better off saving up for that stuff and scheduling it on your own terms. However, having pet insurance for Kiwi for emergencies gives me peace of mind. I know that if something happened to her, I wouldn't have to worry about vet bills, I could get her the care she needed and submit the bills to the insurance and get reimbursed. I think a lot of us would have a hard time spending thousands of dollars that we wouldn't be able to get back. Kiwi recently went through alot of testing for liver shunt, including a liver biopsy. Her insurance, Embrace Pet Insurance, paid me back for every cent (minus the deductible). They cover all genetic illnesses! I spent over $1500in vet bills and they sent me a check in two weeks for $1200. And they even followed up afterwards and asked me if Kiwi had recovered well from surgery!

| Avoid VPI!!!!! I have had a bad experience already - they really don't cover many things. They are really strict on surgeries so just avoid. I recommend Pets care even though the name is really bad because it could easily be translated to Pet SCARE lol

| Oh great, this was going to be my next question to the group. I'm shopping for insurance also. Has anyone heard of or have/had any experiences with ASPCA's pet insurance? TIA

| Pet Insurance PetPlan is by far the best you can get here in the UK, but they offer it in the states too. My vet has told me that that is the only insurance he can count on to pay claims. A lot of companies are rip-offs and don't seem to cover anything when you make a claim. I would definitely recommend PetPlan... heres the site : www.petplan.com

| I agree! Insurance is only good for Emergencies. Such as a broken leg etc... I took Peanut in the other day. And I talked to the Vet. He said that there are some Pet insurance that do well care visits now.

| VPI Pet Insurance I have had VPI insurance for the past year. My yorkie, StarlightStarbright is now 19 months old and I was reimbursed for more than the yearly cost. Therfore, I feel that I have gotten my money's worth and signed up for next year. Star has had minor ailments this year and I almost always received "some" money on my claim. This December my friend told me that Heartworm & Flea/Tick medicine was covered, so I sent in my claim for the year's worth and have received $45. LAD & STAR |

My furkids Donating Member | I have pet VPI and it covered the office visit, shots 15.00 towards heart worm test or meds. I ended up with 3 checks adding up to 80.00. I know they don't cover much for spays. So far I am happy with it. If someone out there knows of a better insurance...please share with the rest of us. I currently pay 57.00 a month for both of the girls.
