| Little Orphan Annie Now that she has been released, I want to share our little Annie. I found her in the middle of the road July 31, 2010 laying on top of her sibling that had been run over by a car. She would not move out of the road, and when I shushed her out of the road, she ran back to "protect" her sibling. It was utterly heart breaking, so I did what any mother would do, I went home, got hubby, a crate, a pair of gloves and we rescued her. Life changed for me that day. Because of all the hype (some of it founded) about raccoons and disease (especially rabies), we kept her absolutely isolated for about 3 weeks, used gloves to feed her and was very careful about coming into contact with any body fluids. I could write a book about living with Annie, and I just might give it a shot, she is the most amazing animal that I have ever had the pleasure of living with. But I won't bore you with all the stories, I'll just post some pics..... |

| Released from where? Has she been in the hospital? Oh, she is precious. How old does the vet think she is? Wonderful pictures. WRITE THE BOOK - I will buy it!

| Annie lived in the house with us until about a week ago. She had her own bedroom and her special dresser drawer that she lived in. We released her to live outside -- she has a special tree to climb and play in and a special place in our barn that she likes to sleep. |

Ummm we weren't able to "vet" her because you aren't supposed to rescue raccoons - but I just couldn't let her die.

| Glad you let her live outside. This way she has a choice to stay or leave. How kind you were to pick her up and take her home and take care of her. She's one lucky little coon.

I am hoping that she will choose to hang around -- in the mornings I call her down from her sleeping place in the barn and we take a walk together to her climbing tree. I wait for her to get her exploring done and climb the tree before I go back inside 'cause she would follow me back inside. In the evenings we reverse the process, I call her down from her from her tree and we take a walk ending up back at the barn.

As Annie matured, she became more aloof and wary of people -- which is a good thing. She will come down from her perch way up in the tree when I call her, but she no longer likes to be touched. We respect her rights as a wild animal and don't ask more of her than she can give. Last edited by chattiesmom; 03-24-2011 at 04:54 PM.
