| Paint/House Decorating Question I need to repaint several rooms in the house.....last year, we did my daughters room. We wanted a darker tan, but not a chocolate...and the color I ended up with was just too light (aurgh)....course, my DH would NOT take it back and repaint over it. I just don't have a good eye for colors. We have pine (wood) ceilings and oak (wood) floors and trim...and windows and doors. Ceiling is 18 foot in her room. Her room is a Paris theme.... Is there anyway someone could post some paint colors they think would look good in her room? I carried fabric samples to Lowe's when I picked out paint and I was still way off! (aurgh) Here's a picture of Lily on Katelyn's bedspread.....I can take pictures of the room later. DSCN1264s.jpg ALSO, For my bedroom, I was thinking about the robin's egg blue color...I love that color and it looks so good with black picture frames, etc against it....BUT I didn't know if it would look good or not. I have the Oak wood floor and wood trim and oak doors and windows and my bedding is a tan suede (which can be changed)...OH, the ceiling is an offwhite....do you think this color would look good? AND, My kitchen is currently a light sage like green w/ a darker green speckled counter top/tile. I am thinking of repainting it some sort of darker tan. The hallway would be painted the same color too (as they tie in together). So........anything "country" color. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP???? I see colors that I think would look good......but then they don't. And some that I like, I think they might be too dark......so I don't get. Also, what type of paint is needed?? Satin, gloss, semi-gloss, etc. The boy at the paint counter at Lowe's was NOT very helpful!!!

| I prefer Satin paint, and semi-gloss if you have a small room like a hallway bathroom. You can allways purchase a paint sample , which I think is a quart. This way you can actually test it out on your wall and see if it looks good or not. For your daughters room, if she wants to go very graphic do a light pink, or bright red. Its her room, why not let her pick out the color? An option for your bedroom is if you want to use the bright robins egg blue, only use it on one wall. Make that your focus wall where you would anchor your bed, and the rest of the walls a neutral color. Too much of that blue can be somewhat glaring after a while. As for your kitchen...What color are your kitchen cabinets? Do you have an existing backsplash? Also what about your appliances? |

| Thanks so much!! Kitchen: The cabinets are oak (as is the floor, which is a darker oak) and the big french doors and windows. The countertops are a darker green speckled (with black/white/gray/etc) and the tile backsplash is a lighter hunter green type. I like black and roosters, so most of the stuff in the kitchen is something like that....and antique kitchen utensils, bottles, etc. Daughters room....she is the one who wanted a darker tan...she liked the "chocolate", but thought it would be too dark....it would look better with black baseboards or white (we think)...so the color we got was a darker mushroom type tan...but it turned out too light for what we wanted. We didn't really want to do pink, as she just wanted to use different shades of pink as accents around her room....she is a teen (while almost 14), so she was looking for a more classy look. I just didn't know if a darker brown type color would be too much "brown" since the ceilings/floors/doors/trim/baseboards/windows are all oak. The ceiling is a light pine and the floors are a darker oak. My room....I have seen one wall painted a certain color (and it is always the wall that the bed is on).....I think that looks good...but what would I do the other walls in?? Again, I think if I had white trim/baseboards/etc it would be easier...but we live in a cedar house...and it is decorated semi country.....it is hard! My first house....was so easy to paint and decorate...this one, I find it hard to for some reason! THANKS AGAIN!!!

| hmm...your kitchen is tricky, would need to see some pics for that one. So far from what you have said, I think a rusty deep brown oxblood color could work. Just have to make sure its not too red or it can make it look too Xmass-y with the green coutnertops. Tans are hit or miss, we painted our TV in a light tan, but turned out to be a blush tan with an undertone of pink. You really need a good eye to see the subtlty in neutrals. The rest of your bedroom walls could be an off white/ eggshell, or go all out Tiffany and do a stark white. Its all hard to say when there is no visuals to attach it to. |

| Here are some KITCHEN pictures Kitchen....sorry if it looks messy...took these just a little while ago after preparing the pot roast for tonight (yum) DSCF8054.jpg Corner cabinet - black appliances - oak floor and cabinets (different shades) DSCF8057.jpg One wall (can you see the "light sage" green), antiques and closet DSCF8056.jpg Not a good picture...showing the oak french doors (leading to deck) and the table area (cluttered right now ) w/ black padded chairs. DSCF8055.jpg Close up of counter top and tile backsplash For the kitchen...I am open to anything that will go with the green counter tops....when we picked out things...we didn't think to do a neutral color on the things that can't be replaced easily...we should have done the "color" on the walls....oh well...live and learn. I don't mind to change the colors (black), but want to keep the antiques....in fact, that wall isn't even done...I have tons more that I need to get placed up there!

| Here are some BEDROOM pictures This is the room I thought about doing the robin's egg blue in. DSCF8061.jpg This is a picture of the oak floor and doors - this is the same throughout the house (1st and 2nd floors of the house). DSCF8062.jpg Light fixture in room...iron work. DSCF8059.jpg Corner by windows...have 6 foot oak windows (with now window dressings right now)....no trim around ceiling...just an off white ceiling with the same "light sage green" in the kitchen. I am open to ANYTHING in this room. Bedspread right now is a tan suede or any quilt that my grandmother makes for me. The bed is on one wall with a dresser on each side of it.

| Pictures of BEDROOM (daughters) Here are some quick shots of my daughters room. The color doesn't look too bad...but would love for something darker. Her room is just hard to paint because one wall is so tall. DSCF8063.jpg Corner picture to show window and door color (oak wood) and paint (wall) color. DSCF8064.jpg Closet door w/ light pink mirror DSCF8065.jpg Bed area...(sorry, it is a mess) - shows the slated pine ceiling (this wall is 3foot tall) - bed in a dormer area.

| I always use satin. At Sherwin Williams and some other places you can buy small samples of paint for about $5 or less to try. It's worth it. About the robins egg blue, if you do that go waaaay lighter than you want because it will turn out darker. I painted my bathroom a light robins egg blue and then repainted it less than 24 hours later because it gave me a headache. House Beautiful usually has color swatches and names in there, which are fun to look at for color ideas. Lighting plays a big part in how color will look on walls too, that's why I paint a swatch directly on the wall. It's worth the trouble to get a color you'll love.

Jenn, Your home looks so pretty and very cozy. I am having the master bedroom painted this Sun. I also wanted a Taupe color and had a hard time choosing. I only like Benjamin Moore paint however and they now make a sample paint that comes in a small jar for 3.50 ea. It's a great idea because you can apply the paint to the wall and live with the color for a couple of days until your sure it's what you want. I picked out a taupe color. It's called "Stonehouse". My new comforter is blues and taupes and the ajoining bathroom is blue and taupe so I hope this turns out nice. I like the samples on the wall so I hope I like it when it's done. Have no choice really, I'll have to like it. LOL I like eggshell finish. It has a little sheen to it but is not glossy like semi-gloss. It's can be washed also. Hope that helps alitlle. | |

| A few years back I was going to do a room in blue but at the last minute I did it in a blue/gray color it..... looked like blue but was a little smoky looking ... I was glad I did because it had a softer more grown up look to it...several people ended up painting their rooms in it.....

With our wood (wood everywhere) I am always just afraid that the colors I like won't look good against the wood!
