ok i have just recently started looking into breeders of local pit bulls . i would love to some day have my very own blue pit bull. the thing is the ones i have seen do not have the docked tails or ears ! someone just replied to my email and said they don't dock the tails as it would count off for the "showing" . well i thought most pits had their tails and ears done that's what gives them the pit look?!! i don't want a pit for show or anything else other than a pet!

we went to the fleas (people had poor animals for sale there hence the fleas) market yesterday and someone had red/rednose pits she said they were 12 weeks old they had the long tails and big floppy ears also. i wanted them all just to get them out of there. who would sale their dogs at a flea market YUCK! anyways...

well i guess i just want to know is it uncommon for someone to dock these dogs tails & ears now? i don't want to get a pup that's 6 weeks or older without it done then it's too late?!!

It seems like the pit bulls I've seen all had tails, my neighbors definately has a tail. And usually the new owners have the ears clipped then taped to stand. Atleast that is what my parents did for their boxer years ago. I can't imagine putting a 6 week old puppy through an ear surgery, seems a bit cruel to have it done at all...jmho...please don't take offense.

I know alot of people 'round these parts,' who breed for the wrong reason, mind you

, dont' dock the tail because it throws off the dog's balance in the ring....and I don't mean the show ring.

I haven't seen to many pitbulls with docked tails....as for the ears...I like the pitbulls with the floppy ears...

Pittbulls don't have docked tails . As for the ears , they are done between 4 to 6 months under surgery . Why do the ears ?

Please don't do the ears! Look at my baby Tank. He isn't with us anymore, but he was so cute with his long ears. I think that the main reason for cutting them is fighting.....

ohhhhhh i just thought thay had ears and tails done as babys i thought that's the way pit bulls are supposed to be done. the ones i have seen have the long tails and ears but pics i see don't. and i wouldn't do it to one after 3-7 days as babys.

so it's done for fighting? i wouldn't ever never fight a dog that's sick

I don't know anything about pit bulls, but my neighbor has a pit bull (beautiful, solid white with crystal blue eyes) and it's tail is not docked and it's ears are not cut.

I know, it's horrible. They cut the ears and tails so that the other dogs can't get as good of a hold on them. Sick bastards!

there are many vets that will crop ears any more. It's painful and unnecessary. Around here it's very difficult to find vet that will do it.

omg see now i knew some people fight dogs, i don't understand it i would never do it but i just thought pit bulls have their tails and ears done i guess like yorkies ,well most of them have their tails done when babys!

so most people don't so that? just fighting dogs? i have seen lots of these short ears & tails pit bulls i just though that's the way they are supposed to be.

Neither of these breeds have a docked tail.
In fact in the standard they are to have a full tail.

The EARS are what may be altered. You can either leave them drop/rose (i.e. natural) or you may CROP the ears, but you may not DOCK the tail.

If you love the pup I don't think it matters if the tail is long or short. Our yorkies don't judge us by looks they go by personality.

If I'm not mistaken, you're suppose to wait till the pup is 3-5 months old before you cut the ears. Many BYB of pits will do this at birth and then you see these pits running around that has ears all messed up.

I know that with Min-Pins, you're suppose to wait till they are older and their ears have grown in...that way, the vet can cut them correctly and in proportion to their heads.

The UKC (united kennel club) is very big on working dogs. Every show I go to I meet a new pit bull owner and they are involved in conformation as well as weight pulls (which I love to watch).

May I suggest you call the UKC (they're super friendly and will help you) and ask them to send you in the direction of some of their featured breeders?

I used to be somewhat fearful of pit bulls. I was a victim of the stories over and over about "bad owners" and having them for the "wrong reasons". Well since meeting ALOT of them in person, and I'm talking very well bred, terrifically trained dogs, I have a new respect for them now. They are very gentle yet playful when in the RIGHT hands.

One of UKC's featured Pit bull breeders that I am familiar with is Pepper Wolter. Her Sires and Dams are Grand championed, weight pull titled and health tested. Her phone is (951)534-2627. I am posting her number because she AND her number are featured on the back of October's issue of Bloodline's magazine.
