| Bush Admits Blame for Katrina Response I just viewed the video in which Pres. Bush admits responsibility for the gov.'s response to Katrina. He says: "...and to the extent the federal government didn't fully do its job right, I take full responsibility." The link to the video is attached below. It's about time responsibilty for the tragedy is accepted and acknowledged rather than people just pointing fingers. It's necessary to find the root of the problem in instances such as the Hurricane Katrina recovery to ensure that something like this never happens again. Now, those that need to can re-evaluate their response plans to major disasters and the rest of the country can only hope we fare better the next time around. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9324891/ |

| I don't agree w/ the current Bush administration, BUT I would prefer to see this thread titled "Bush ACCEPTS blame for Katrina response". |

| Thanks for posting the video - I just watched it. Now that all the finger pointing is (hopefully) over, I hope they will establish an effective response plan for future natural disasters.

| Sorry, I can't edit the post any more. Nothing was meant by "admits" more than accepts- just an oversight on my part. However, IMO, admits could still be appropriate. |

| Oh gawd, not another political thread... Haven't we all learned not to talk about politics/religion on a yorkie forum yet? I mean, do we REALLY need more drama here? |

I'd be interested to hear what in my post was political. I posted on something that happened and didn't interject my opion on the president at all. I said I was glad that the finger pointing could be over with and that those responsible could learn from their mistakes. Let's not be oversensitive on anything having to do with a politician and just assume people are trying to create drama.

| President Bush has such great character I'm not surprised he accepted blame for the Katrina mess. Just goes to show you what a great guy he really is, and now maybe he's taken the wind out of a few sails in Washington! W is my hero and I think he's a HOTTIE!!!!!!!!!

We're still in a war (Iraq) and have troops there longer than "planned/expected". We're still trying to rebuild Afghanistan (and have troops there). We're still in talks w/ North Korea over nukes (over one year now). We've pointed our finger at Iran saying they are using nuclear technology to make weapons. And now there is the aftermath of Katrina... Bush is making a speech tonight http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/....ap/index.html "Bush is planning to show sympathy for the misery brought on by the killer storm while charting a hopeful vision for the future. Many people, including members of the president's party, have said he should have given that kind of speech soon after the hurricane..."

| How can a natural disaster be someone's fault? There should be no finger pointing at all. It wasn't Bush's fault any more than it was yours. When you live 7 feet below sea level, what do you expect to happen when a hurricane is coming?

| The natural disaster itself is not anyone's fault. The problem is, the levees that surround New Orleans. That is what REALLY caused damage. These levees were lacking any sort of "real" engineering that could prevent water from getting through. Basically, think of those levees as a wood/stick damn built by beavers. In fact, here is a picture of actual New Orleans levees taken in 1995. http://www.gpc.edu/~pgore/myphotos/neworlen/levee2.gif http://gpc.edu/~pgore/myphotos/neworlen/levee1.gif So this problem was ignored for years and years. Then Katrina came. Someone or some people ignored the issue. So there is going to be some finger pointing. Another problem, was the lack of immediate response to the millions of people in need. Those are the issues that Bush is taking responsibility for. Not the natural disaster itself, but the aftermath and the pre-existing problems that lead New Orleans to become flooded. Stuff that was preventable. |
