| Epidural for neck pain Has anyone ever had an epidural for pain (besides one for delivering a baby)? I have a few herniated disks in my neck that are causing me alot of pain and some other things. Thursday they are giving me an epidural under sedation and Im scared to death. Years ago another dr tried to give me one with a local to numb it and it didnt happen I had a panic attack and passed out. And I totally chickened out the last time. This dr said it was actually good I did because the way this old Dr was doing it was very dangerous. And this dr actually no longer practices medicine in my state anymore. Has anyone had this and it actually worked? THey are doing some testing while doing this also to make sure its my nerves in my neck causing the problem and not the disks themselves. Im praying its just the nerves cause if its not I may need surgery.

| Hi Chrissy, I'm sorry I can't be of any help on the epidural question for you...I had no idea they used that other than in child birth.......There are some nurses on this site maybe they will see this and offer you some help.... I just wanted to say I hope everything goes well for you Thursday and everything is fine....When it comes to the neck and spine it can be very scary.....I'll be wishing you well Thursday......

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | i've never had it done or seen it done on a human but i did see the vet do it on a dog with spinal pain once. i was amazed. i had never seen it before. that doggie felt much better later that day. we did sedate the dog for the procedure. it took about 5 minutes i think.

| I keep telling myself I can do this!!!! Hopefully I dont have the same reaction I had when Temple University tried to sedate me and I had a reaction and became very violent. I beat up the OR nurses and punched a Dr and the bad part... I dont remember a thing lol. So now when my temple specialist do anything that requires sedating me use heavy duty stuff on me. I did warn this new dr of my issues.

| If it is the same thing my friend had for her neck pain, it completely relieved the pain. She was told that it might take 2-3 injections to stop the pain (and that it might not work at all). But hers worked with one injection and she has been pain free for over a year.

| Hi Chrissy, I personally have not had the epidural but my husband has had many of them. He has stenosis of the spine and has had 2 back surgeries within 4 months. The surgeries have not helped and he is in constant pain. The doctor at the pain clinic has tried as many as 6 injections (epidural) at one time in his spine. Sometimes they give him a little relief for a few weeks but the pain is NEVER completely gone. He said that the never feels the injections after the numbing but sometimes he has pain going down his leg and into his feet. The doctor has decided that he will not do any more epidurals. Hubby will be on pain medication the rest of his life and will never be completely free of pain. Hope this helps you some. Good luck with your injections.

| Thanks. I would be happy with any pain relief even if its not totally gone. Its gotten to the point I cant function. Im actually Dizzy almost all the time and it hurts to even move sometimes. Im finding the only comfortable position is laying down and we all know how practical it is to lay down all the time lol

| Epidurals I have had too many epidurals in my lifetime, shoulder, neck, back, tailbone, and have had them ongoing for many years for my back.....they do help,,,,,,BUT the one thing I was never told is that I now have STEROID INDUCED DIABETES because of them.....I'd never even heard of this before and was never warned about the possibilities of developing it.....I finally found a great NeuroSurgeon in Las Vegas and am now pain free from my back pain....I just wish this procedure was available 20 years ago...... |

| I hope that everything goes well for you today. My husband is actually having a shot this afternoon for lower back pain (he has stenosis and herniated discs) This will be our first experience with it also.

| My husband had severe leg pain that apparently stemmed from some spinal thing. The only thing the dr. could do was the epidurals. He had several and felt better afterwards then a year or so later had several more and felt better again. Just when the pain was getting bad again he had a serious motorcycle accident, broke his leg so bad that they were afraid they wouldn't be able to save it (but thank God they did), was laid up and off work for nearly a year but finally recuperated. Know what?? No more leg pain (or should I say no more of that particular leg pain)! Something got jarred back in place I guess - whatever was causing that pain. Now we just have to deal with more surgery eventually for his knee issues made worse by the accident. So, long story short (too late!)..... the epidurals worked for him. Good luck in whatever you decide to do!
