| Out of My Mind Someone please help I have a 3 year old female yorkie and two weeks ago I got a 4 month old male. Well now the problems begin. I did get a Ex-Pen for him and set him up in it and next thing I new he was climbing out of the pen. I have tried to train him on wee wee pads, I take him outside constantly and he just keeps going on the floor in the house. Nothing I do works. I even went and bought books and they tell you not to yell at the puppy but he is constantly going to the bathroom indoors. He has also made life miserable for my 3 year old by eating all her food. What can I do!!!! |

| I am so sorry to hear that you are having trouble. Sounds like you need a top on that Xpen and maybe some bellybands. Do you free feed your dogs? I think one of the breeders on here says she just lets her adults eat the puppy food so everyone stays on puppy food fro a few months til the puppy is old enough for adult. If you feed them on a schedule then maybe you can feed her while he is in his pen and feed him in his pen. Hope it helps. Good luck. |

| Wow, it sounds like your new little guy is keeping you so busy! Is the ex-pen you have really small or the larger one? Sounds like you'd need the 3ft tall, he probably wouldnt be able to climb out a taller one, but if you are using the gunie pig ex-pen he probably laughs at it and hops right out lol. I think switching them both to the same food would be a good idea, but if you dont want to switch him try feeding them both on a schedule. When I 1st brought Max home I had the same problem with him and Missy so I fed them on a schedule, breakfast lunch dinner. After a week or so of that food wasnt an issue and I went back to free feeding. Potty training can take weeks or even months, sounds like you are doing the right thing. I use Belly Bands on Max just incase he has an accident the Belly Band will absorb it. Keep up the good work, I know it can get frustraiting but he will learn really soon, I am sure of it

| First your 4 months yorkie sound like all my yorkies. Any confinement without a top is only a suggestion by me to stay inside. None of them listen to me and they either climb or jump out. My solution is that I keep them in metal crates with a top so they can't climb or jump out. My yorkies love to play "swap food" or "I'm finished my food, now I'm going to eat yours" all the time. My solution is I feed them in their individual crate or away from each other(literally- I feed in different rooms with door closed). Potty training is a hard one. Don't get frustrated. Most of us went through the same thing. I know you probably know what to do since you already have a dog. It might just be that he need you to keep an better eye on him or that it might take more time for him to understand. Don't give up and sooner or later, he will learn. |

Yorkie Lover Donating Member | I would say just keep doing what you are doing...it will pay off in the end...it took a while for Sailor to catch on but once she did, we haven't had a problem since!!! I think it just one days clikcs with them and they all of a sudden get it....

| Do you keep the belly band on them all the time that they roam free. He is out of the pen as I stated and to start to confine him at this point I would probably end up with more problems. As far as the food I hold him while my 3 year old eats. I do free feed but this little guy will eat you out of house and home. |

| Rita, you really need to get a top for your pen if you want him to stay in it. As far as potty training goes, well, he has just not had enough time. Belly bands at this stage I think are premature. It is hard enough getting a puppy outside in time without having to undress him first. |

| Sounds like you have a fiesty little fellow. Possibly try using some of the puppy training spray on his wee wee pads. The pads themselves are not attracting him enough to make him understand their purpose. Start with 3 pads in 3 places that he seems to use the floor. This will be stinky, but it's for his own good and your sanity, LOL. Also pick a place outside and spray that one area also. I think once he understands that your floors are not the acceptable place, the pads are, he will start using the pads. If your 3 year old is outside trained, try to focus him on outside training too and use the pads inside for emergencies. You can reduce the pads to 2 pads and then one and eventually none. Also buy some Nature's Miracle and treat the spots on the floor he used previously. In other words, I think he needs reinforcement by using the spray scent. I have had pups that were fiesty like that and it is a plan of action that works in many cases. He is too busy playing and exploring to take the time to potty properly, he does not think it is important, he would rather be playing, so you have to get his attention on the proper place and enforce it and reinforce it. He will get it. Good luck to you!
