| Anyone have this problem? We have a tea cup Yorkie, he is about a year and a half right now. He has some very strange skin problems. The Vets are hanging us dry, and no cure. They come up with a different answer every time we come in! When we got him he was in extremely BAD condition. He smelled so bad, his coat was awful, with a mix of dry and oily spots, and he had strange oily and sticky skin flakes and scabs. At first the vet gave us antibiotics and shampoos. Didnt work. Then the vets office began giving him scabies mites baths once every week until he cleared. After he cleared, we stopped going and 2 weeks later is all started coming back. We took him again. She was too concerned about nutering and pulling his teeth then his skin. We took him to another vet. He said he had yeast. Gave a shampoo for twice a week wash. Didnt work AT ALL. Came back. Another vet said he had mange mites and maybe a tiny infection from his constant itching and scratching. Now were giving him antibiotics, baths, skin supplements, and another medication. Anyone go through a similar experience? Can anyone help? I'm just wondering what their next "diagnosis" would be. Any help would be great! Thank you!!! |

| My Chachi had mites. He had to go through a series of 6 mite dip baths. Mites are very hard to get rid of. They also get them when ther immune system s down which makes me wonder if your baby has some undelining proplem since she has had them twice.

| Mitzi (10 y.o.) had skin problems like you describe for many many years and nothing really helped. Several weeks ago we switched her to raw food (beef, turkey, chicken, lamb and raw bones, mixed with a little oatmeal, very little oatmeal) and her skin cleared up finally. I don't know why, it just did and I'm extremly happy. What helped her before was keeping her hair short, frequent baths with oatmeal shampoo and keeping a shirt on her (that's actually how PocoMutt designs started... so... something good came out of it. But I sure wish the reason would have been something less painfull for Mitzi and less worrysome for me!!!) I hope you'll find the right treatment! |

| First things first Welcome to Yorkie Talk! I am so very sorry that your little one is having such terrible skin problems. I am not a vet nor have I had serious skin issues, but it seems like you might be right about your vets taking you to the cleaners. Have you considered looking for a different vet? Has the vet done any skin swabs, cultures, or used a black light to rule out a fungal issue? If so, I would strongly recommend to start from the inside out rather than just toy around with shampoo/conditioners. Look at the whole dog, not just the skin -- what is he eating, where does he sleep, where does he spend his time.... maybe an environmental allergy is the trigger for an allergic reaction. Good luck! Please keep us posted..... |

YT Addict | I have a question you may not want to ask. Welcome to YT You will find a wealth of knowledge here. I am sorry to hear about your problems with your baby. I hope that you will find out soon for both your sakes. My prayers are with you and you yorkie. One thing I have learned from YT is that there is no such thing as a tea cup yorkie. That is a term used by "some breeders" so they can add to the price of the dog. I mean no disrespect to you or your breeder but its the truth. That being said I have to wonder if your breeder knew something that they never told you? Like a hereditary allergy or something of the likes. I am not a vet nor do I claim to be but I just thought I should ask just in case. Its not unheard of, for a breeder to know of a genetic problem or a hereditary issue and not speak up about it. For you sake I sincerely hope that it is just a what if type of question but it is one I would ask. If you don't know the pedigree of your baby I would find out just to satisfy your curiosity, so that way you know that area of your baby's health is clean. Like I said I am not a vet but it is a question that I personally would ask and try to find out about. I hope you baby feels better soon! |

| Do I understand correctly, your little guy is a year and a half, and you just recently got him, and he had the problem when you got him? Did you get him from a breeder or a pet store? When they get a skin infection they do smell bad. there are two forms of mange, one is treatable, the other is very difficult to treat. I would ask the vet for more information. did they do a skin scraping to determine what he has? If you have a veterinary university colse to you, you might want to try contacting them. My concern with one so small would be what harm all those chemicals are doing to him. |

| There are a few different types of mange..some being much harder to treat then others...your description sounds like it may be just that....I've heard it takes a bit of time and on going treatment for it to finally go away...

| This might sound crazy but I swear it is the truth I once had a mix maltese that had that problem. She was allergic to grass. She had to get shots every month..this was 15 yrs ago At that time I could not afford dog shots every month. I tried keeping her inside but, it did not work because we would carry grass and dirt in our shoes..I thought I was going to have to BUT.. Someone took her in gave her the shots and as far as I know is healthy and beautiful .
