| New member Gosh. I joined about a week ago and am still learning my way around here. This is my first post so hope I'm doing it correctly. I have gotten a wealth of information already from this site! I have always wanted a little yorkie but for one reason or another have always had medium to larger dogs (mostly mixed breeds from the shelter). I am finally thinking of taking the plunge but am hoping for some reassurance out there. What differences have you found between larger dogs and yorkies? Any easier or more difficult? Thanks for any advice. Theresa |

| Theresa, I was just like you...mostly mixed breeds from the shelter...and my last one was mostly Yorkie, but he weighed about 10 pounds. Since I'd always wanted one...I just jumped in and bought one. Thankfully, I managed to find a good home breeder close by. I didn't know about YorkieTalk then. If you haven't had any kind of puppy in a while, you're in for some surprises! You have all the usual stuff, only with a smarter, more stubborn baby! As with anything else, every dog and every owner is different. But I don't regret it a bit!! Make sure you check ALL the sub-forums...You'll learn tons here before you make the plunge...

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | Welcome to YT, and I commend you for asking around before you take the plunge. Positives * Smaller turds * Less destructive capacity. * Can take them more places because more people are more tolerant of small dogs. * They eat less * They don't drag you on walks * Affectionate * They don't shed * They have all the spirit of a big dog in a small frame Negatives * They are delicate, and you have to watch them around kids and other dogs * Though smaller in size, they are not necessarily smaller in vet bills. * Grooming is expensive unless you do it yourself. * You will never, ever want to be away from them I always considered small dogs to be yappers not worth my time, but I've never had smarter, more affectionate dogs in my life. I will always own Yorkies.

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Welcome to YT, Theresa. Personally, I've found that the smaller dogs are much easier to manage and have as pets. Also, they don't shed which is a plus. Now, potty training a yorkie isn't quite as easy as with a bigger dog. My Gracie is 3 years old and will still potty in the house if it's raining outside or we have a heavy dew. Makes me so mad!!! Other than that, yorkies are easier to cuddle and are perfect lap dogs. Kinda hard having a 20+ lb dog on your lap.

| Hi, welcome! I am new here too! I just took my Mickey home a few days ago. He is just under 4 lbs, and I am used to a 40 lb dog, so I am going through the transition from a med dog, to a small dog right now! I have owned two siberian huskies in the past, one still lives at my parents house. Since I have only owned Mickey for a few days I havent discovered all of the differences yet. I think that Mickey is much more affectionate than my larger dogs- he is a true lap dog! He loves being held, and just hanging out on my lap my other dogs would freak (even at the puppy age!) when they were being held. Definitely more yappy... My huskies were vocal, but NEVER barked! Mickey is a cry baby, and his whines quickly turn to barks if you ignore him. He 's a loud one! It's taking a lot to ignore him, and hope that he gets over it! Also, the exercise requirement- smaller dogs dont require near as much exercise as bigger ones! I will say that one of the reasons I chose a Yorkie is because they do tend to have a "big dog" personality! Since I am in an apartment now, and I can't ahve a big dog, I think a Yorkie is perfect for me! I am very happy with him! Whatever you decide, good luck! |
