New Here...wire chewing ?? Hi all!! We have a 4 month old Yorkie named Bitsy. We are having some trouble with wire chewing and are wondering if anyone has some suggestions on how to break this dangerous behavior. Our little princess is very high energy. She loves to chase our feet, which can be very annoying, but cute. We have had her since she was 6 weeks old. I will try to post some pics when I have time. I look forward to getting to meet you all!! Jeni

Lovin' 2 Girls Donating Member | Hi Jeni, Welcome to YT! Is it only wire she chews, or seemingly everything? She's in the teething range, where nothing is safe and we just have to watch them. My Abbie will be 13 months in January, and up until just a couple of months ago she thought her name was: "What are you chewing?" or, "What's that in your mouth?"

My Britain chews EVERYTHING. Especially shoelaces. If I sit still for to long she has them untied. I have just about killed myself tripping over them . What I have started doing when I catch her chewing on something that she shouldnt be or that is damgerous I take it away from her and say "not Britain's" then I give her something that she is allowed to chew on. like a toy or treat and say "this is Britain's" She is getting to the point where when she heres "Not Britains" she stops chewing on it. But if I dont replace it with a toy she will chew on it again.

Making sure they have plenty of good things to chew on does help. There are also products that you can spray or brush on that will have a bitter flavor and stop them from chewing on them. Bitter Apple, Bitter Lime, Bitter Lime are ones I have seen. Good luck.

There's some gadget (I can't find the bookmark) made to stop the wire biting. Maybe do a google search, but Bitter Apple spray worked beautifully for Max. Spray whatever it is you don't want her chewing a few days in a row and it might just work. I also taught him "NO..get a toy." After a while, he learned to run for a toy, with im for a few minutes and that was that. Flossies and the Merrick's non-rawhide chew sticks are great. Ice cubes are also great - I found a tiny ice cube tray so that he coulden't choke. Peeled apple slices and tiny carrots are also good, as are healthy chewy treats. In other words, always have something in her mouth to teeth on - it will end. Then they go through it again, but mildly, at about 7 months. They're older though and already know what they're not allowed to do for the most part. Keep those little yorkie teeth busy - that's all you have to do. Hang in there. Judy

Several here suggested putting clear deoderant on anything they seem to want to chew on. It worked for mine! I know several are afraid of using it. My entire kitchen had clear deoderant on every peice of wood in it! And even my cousins boot laces got the clear deoderant. Also the hole she chewed in the lenolium floor, I doused it really good, and she never went back to finish taking the rest of the floor up. Lol on the wire strippers and tape. Hey, whatever works. I keep all electrical cords off the floor, and my laptop cord is looped through a hook in my ceiling to keep it up off the floor too. I'd seen others here that had bought several laptop cords, and I knew I didn't want to have to do that. The clear deoderant did work, on everything that was wood in my kitchen. My china cabinet, has no bites on it, neither does my 4 chairs, bench or table. She did get to some molding, and door frames before I put the deoderant on them. But after deoderant, she never went back to those spots.
