| x pen vs. Crate I have an 11 week Yorkie. Tyson is a great boy & I love him to pieces. I am gone for about 7 hours a day & was advised against crating him. I leave him in my living room-blocked off. I want to confine him & I noticed several YT'ers talking about xpens. Do you think putting him in an x pen will help with house breaking and where would I find one? |

| Xpens are great for giving them a larger area than a crate and can be purchased on ebay, petco, petsmart etc. Most members have the xpen with their crate inside along with pee pads and food. You can put a tarp under the xpen so if they have accidents it is not going through to the carpet. The xpen also keeps them away from outlets and other dangerous areas they could get in.

| I use the XPEN for my 3 little ones (Jasmine, Bitsy, and Butch). Pee pads on one side, sleeping area and toys on other side. I have the bowls which attach to the sides of the XPEN for food and water. I put a piece of linoleum under the XPEN so I can clean the area easier (and it keeps the tiles in the sunroom from getting dirty). The XPEN keeps them from getting into any "trouble". They sleep in a 24" by 36" crate at night. Good luck with your little one.

| Something I've found to work better is a cheapo Wal-Mart plastic table cloth. Put it cloth side up with the plastic side on the floor. Any liquid is sopped right up by the cloth and the plastic protects floors from the liquid. I've never used it under a whole pen before just under water and food bowls. I suppose poopy doops would be difficult to clean up on it ! |

| I use a playpen that was my sons. It was one of the older ones with the mesh on it. It works great. |

| I used an Xpen with Bailey and now with Morgan too. Once Bailey was able to hold it for longer periods of time (up to 8-hours) and was potty trained outside I moved him into a 24" x 36" crate. I found the problem with the xpen is that once I got him trained to go outside and removed the potty pads he still went potty in the same place the potty pads once were, which is the reason for the move to the bigger crate. Once Morgan gets a little older (6 - 8 mo) we will move her into the bigger crate with Bailey. I would highly suggest purchasing one. They tend to be a little pricey - $59.99 - $99.99 but well worth the furniture and carpet you would have to replace otherwise. I hope this helps.

| If you go online and find a cheaper one, then print out that ad and take it to PetSmart, they will match the price. I got mine for I think $43.00 that way. I just did a search for midwest fencing. model 544-36. I'll try to find the site and post it here. Found it http://www.rockbottompetsupply.com/product_p/544-36.htm Last edited by JeanieK; 04-06-2006 at 01:54 PM. |

| Salbug12, I use the exact same kind. He loves it. he has slept in that since he was a baby. We got him when he was 9 weeks old. He sleeps in it at night with his puppy pad and his bed and toys.... He also stays in it when we leave to go out if he isn't with us. If you start him out early it will make life so much easier. My grandmother never crated hers and now he is 2 and out of control. He has had to have surgery to remove stuff that he tried to eat. It all got blocked and wouldn't pass. Talk about a quick $800. She wants to crate him now but I don't see it working. Good Luck.
