I use the XPEN for my 3 little ones (Jasmine, Bitsy, and Butch). Pee pads on one side, sleeping area and toys on other side. I have the bowls which attach to the sides of the XPEN for food and water. I put a piece of linoleum under the XPEN so I can clean the area easier (and it keeps the tiles in the sunroom from getting dirty). The XPEN keeps them from getting into any "trouble".
They sleep in a 24" by 36" crate at night.
